Finnish lumber producer Koskisen has commissioned new channel kilns at its J\u00e4rvel\u00e4 sawmill, increasing drying capacity by approximately 15% and supporting the company's long-term goal of raising annual lumber production to 450,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n
The investment marks another step in Koskisen's multi-year modernization programme, which has seen nearly \u20ac90 million invested in the J\u00e4rvel\u00e4 sawmill and closely integrated operations over the past five years. The programme has focused on increasing production capacity, improving operational efficiency and strengthening the competitiveness of one of Finland's key lumber manufacturing sites.<\/p>\n
According to the company, the new channel kilns will not only expand drying capacity but also improve lumber quality and consistency by enhancing drying performance across production batches.<\/p>\n
Drying is one of the most critical stages in lumber manufacturing, often determining both production efficiency and product quality. By increasing capacity at this stage, Koskisen is removing a key bottleneck in the production process and creating conditions for higher throughput throughout the sawmill.<\/p>\n
Supporting growth to 450,000 m\u00b3 of lumber production<\/strong><\/p>\n The J\u00e4rvel\u00e4 sawmill currently produces approximately 400,000 m\u00b3 of lumber annually. Koskisen's next development phase aims to increase output to 450,000 m\u00b3 per year through improved utilization of existing infrastructure rather than large-scale expansion of manufacturing facilities.<\/p>\n The company believes that higher production volumes can be achieved by improving efficiency across the entire process chain. Expanding drying capacity plays a central role in that strategy because it enables greater volumes of lumber to move through production without creating downstream constraints.<\/p>\n Additional storage facilities connected to the drying process have also been introduced as part of the project. These upgrades improve material handling and internal logistics while supporting smoother production flows throughout the site.<\/p>\n According to Koskisen CEO Jukka Pahta, the commissioning of the channel kilns represents another milestone in the company's planned development path for the J\u00e4rvel\u00e4 operation and brings the sawmill closer to its long-term production target.<\/p>\n Energy integration reduces need for new investments<\/strong><\/p>\n One of the distinguishing features of the project is its integration with Koskisen's existing energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n The new drying capacity is supported by an energy system that utilizes cooperation between the company's plywood and sawmilling operations. Heat generation resources are shared across business units, creating efficiencies while supporting sustainability objectives.<\/p>\n A district heating pipeline connecting the company's factory locations was completed at the end of 2025.
