Swedish lumber producer Stenvalls has completed a major expansion of its Sikfors sawmill, doubling annual production capacity from 180,000 m\u00b3 to 360,000 m\u00b3 following a series of investments spanning the entire production chain.<\/p>\n

The project included the installation of a new saw line, advanced scanning and optimization technology, upgrades to log sorting and dry sorting operations, and improvements to downstream processing facilities. The company says the modernization is designed to increase throughput, improve value recovery from raw material and shorten lead times from the forest to finished products.<\/p>\n

New saw line forms the core of expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most significant part of the investment is a new high-capacity saw line that has transformed the production flow at Sikfors.<\/p>\n

According to Stenvalls, the previous facility had already increased production from 170,000 m\u00b3 to 180,000 m\u00b3 through efficiency improvements, but the latest investment effectively doubles the mill's capacity.<\/p>\n

The company reports that the new line is capable of processing material at speeds of up to 220 metres per minute, compared with approximately 80 metres per minute previously. Additional saw blades and improved cutting technology allow the mill to maintain higher production speeds while processing larger logs.<\/p>\n

The project was carried out while the existing operation remained active, requiring extensive coordination across departments to keep production running during construction and commissioning.<\/p>\n

Focus on faster flow and reduced lead times<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond increasing output, Stenvalls aimed to improve the overall efficiency of its manufacturing process.<\/p>\n

Management says the objective is to produce more lumber using the same amount of time while reducing the period between harvesting and delivery of finished products. New logistics systems and automated material handling have been introduced throughout the site to improve production flow and reduce bottlenecks.<\/p>\n

The dry sorting facility, which processes lumber after kiln drying, has undergone a significant upgrade, including new infeed systems and enhanced stack handling capabilities. These improvements were necessary to manage the larger volumes generated by the expanded sawmill.<\/p>\n

Advanced scanning technology improves recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n

A key feature of the modernization is the widespread use of scanning and optimization systems designed to maximize value recovery from each log.<\/p>\n

Incoming logs are scanned before sawing to determine the most efficient cutting pattern. Additional scanners evaluate lumber quality throughout the production process, identifying knots, density variations, defects and other characteristics that influence product value.<\/p>\n

The technology also includes metal-detection systems capable of identifying embedded objects such as nails before they damage equipment or affect product quality.<\/p>\n

According to Stenvalls, the new systems enable the mill to sort products more accurately and direct each board toward the most appropriate end use, increasing the proportion of higher-value products.<\/p>\n

Greater automation throughout the operation<\/strong><\/p>\n

Automation has become a central element of the new production setup.<\/p>\n

Employees increasingly monitor processes through control systems rather than manually handling material. Automated conveyors, scanners and optimization software now perform many tasks that previously required operator intervention.<\/p>\n

The company says the modernization has improved workplace safety while supporting significantly higher production volumes.<\/p>\n

Production personnel noted that the new facility allows operators to monitor large sections of the manufacturing process from centralized control rooms while maintaining detailed oversight of product quality and raw material utilization.<\/p>\n

Planer mill and further processing upgraded<\/strong><\/p>\n

The investment programme extended beyond the sawmill itself.<\/p>\n

Stenvalls has introduced new optimization equipment in downstream processing operations, enabling more precise grading and product selection. The company produces a broad range of value-added wood products, including interior panels, exterior cladding, flooring components and specialty wood products.<\/p>\n

Optimization systems determine how individual boards should be processed based on their quality characteristics, helping maximize revenue from each cubic metre of raw material.<\/p>\n

The company reported that the planer mill is expected to produce approximately 2.3 million linear metres of finished components in 2025, including around 3.4 million linear metres of ready-planed products.<\/p>\n

Pellet production benefits from higher lumber output<\/strong><\/p>\n

Increased sawmill production also generates larger volumes of by-products such as sawdust, shavings and wood chips.<\/p>\n

These residual materials are processed at the site's pellet plant, which produces approximately 1,000 tonnes of pellets per week. The pellets are sold both regionally and in export markets across northern Europe.<\/p>\n

By integrating lumber production and pellet manufacturing, Stenvalls is able to utilize virtually all parts of the log while creating additional value streams from production residues.<\/p>\n

Raw material intake reaches 800,000 m\u00b3 annually<\/strong><\/p>\n

The expanded Sikfors operation now processes approximately 800,000 m\u00b3 of logs annually.<\/p>\n

According to information released by the company, roughly 75% of the lumber produced at the site undergoes further processing before shipment, reflecting Stenvalls' focus on value-added products rather than commodity lumber.<\/p>\n
