Market participants report that the conflicts in the Middle East have affected lumber sales to several destinations in the Arab region, one of the key export markets for Austrian softwood products after Italy. As a result, Austrian sawmills are expected to reduce lumber production by around 2% this year compared with 2025.

With log supply generally sufficient, sawmills have shown limited urgency in purchasing additional volumes. In Styria, where salvage harvesting continues in storm- and damage-affected areas, the removal of timber from forests has been slowed by transport constraints and intake restrictions at some sawmills. In most other parts of the country, roadside log inventories have been largely reduced, although delivery quotas remain in place at certain facilities.

Prices for the benchmark spruce sawlog assortment remained broadly stable, with regional levels generally ranging between EUR 110/m³ and EUR 128/m³.

Pine continues to face a difficult market environment. Industry sources point to strong competition from Scandinavian suppliers and ongoing pressure on sawn timber prices. Larch, by contrast, remains readily marketable, with prices holding firm.

Industrial roundwood market strengthens

Conditions are considerably stronger in the industrial roundwood segment.

The panel industry is facing reduced availability of recovered wood, leading to increased interest in fresh industrial roundwood supplies. Demand from pulp and paper producers also remains active as raw material inventories continue to decline.

Market participants report that available volumes are being collected quickly and accepted without significant delays. Prices for several industrial roundwood assortments have increased during recent weeks, while beech fibrewood continues to trade at stable levels.

Energy wood market varies by region

The energy wood market presents a mixed picture across Austria.

Demand in Carinthia follows normal seasonal patterns, while Lower Austria continues to record strong consumption due to the expansion of district heating networks. In Upper Austria, however, selling volumes outside established long-term contracts remains difficult.

Despite recent rainfall, Austria continues to face a significant precipitation deficit. Forest owners are being advised to closely monitor stands for bark beetle activity, particularly where storm-damaged or otherwise vulnerable timber remains in the forest.

Assortment

Unit

June 2026 Price Range

Market Situation

Spruce/Fir Sawlogs B, 2b+

€/m³

110–128

Subdued demand, adequate supply

Spruce/Fir Sawlogs 3a

€/m³

110–128

Stable market conditions

Pine Sawlogs 2a+

€/m³

75–90

Under pressure from Scandinavian oversupply

Larch Sawlogs 3a+

€/m³

140–181

Stable demand and pricing

Spruce/Fir Pulpwood

€/m³

36–50

Strong demand from pulp and paper industry

Beech Pulpwood

€/m³

55–74

Stable demand and pricing

Demand for softwood sawlogs in Austria remained subdued during May and early June despite generally adequate log availability across most regions of the country.

[5204

post-99067","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
