The recovery many European sawmills had been counting on this spring has not arrived. What began as optimism around Easter demand quietly became hope during May. That too passed without event, leaving producers across the continent facing a more competitive market than most had planned for entering 2026.<\/p>\n
Sales activity through May and into June remained subdued. Public holidays and shortened working weeks provided some cover, but the underlying picture was the same: buyers stayed cautious, limiting purchases to immediate needs and showing little appetite to rebuild inventories. For sawmills already operating on thin margins, the absence of restocking demand was felt.<\/p>\n
The pressure is coming from the demand side, not supply. Softwood sawlog availability across much of Central Europe remains adequate, and raw material procurement is not the primary concern for most producers right now. The problem is shifting finished volumes at prices that hold up margins \u2014 and that is proving increasingly difficult as competition among suppliers intensifies around a relatively narrow pool of active orders.<\/p>\n
Construction remains the weak point. Activity in several major European economies continues to run below historical averages, and neither distributors nor industrial buyers are showing urgency to increase stock levels. With supply readily available and no obvious catalyst on the horizon, buyers see little reason to commit to larger purchases. Many are content to wait.<\/p>\n
That dynamic puts sawmills in an uncomfortable position. Log costs remain relatively firm in many regions while lumber prices struggle to gain traction. Some producers have already responded by adjusting operating schedules, extending maintenance periods or running at reduced capacity to avoid building inventory through the summer. Meaningful price increases have been difficult to implement \u2014 and in some cases, transaction prices have moved in the other direction.<\/p>\n
What makes the current moment significant is that many producers had incorporated a stronger second quarter into their expectations for the full year. With that assumption now being revised, the industry is approaching the midpoint of 2026 with a more uncertain outlook than anticipated.<\/p>\n
Participants are not describing the situation as a collapse. Order books remain open and lumber continues to move. But the pace is not enough to support higher prices or meaningfully increased production levels, and the longer the recovery stays absent, the more it shapes decision-making at individual mills.<\/p>\n
For now, the softwood market sits in an uncomfortable middle ground. Raw material is there. The customers are not \u2014 at least not in the volumes the industry had been waiting for.
