The cooperative responded with cost-cutting measures, restructuring and mill closures before eventually benefiting from a market recovery.

At the time, China remained a powerful growth engine for global pulp demand, while improving economic conditions offered a relatively clear path back to profitability.

According to discussions at the 2026 AGM, the current situation is different. Instead of waiting for a cyclical recovery, producers are increasingly confronting changes in global supply chains, fibre competition and end-market demand patterns.

Management repeatedly stressed that traditional assumptions about market recovery can no longer be taken for granted.

China's changing role creates new risks

One of the most important themes at the AGM was the transformation of China's position in the pulp market.

CEO Lotta Lyrå reminded members that nearly one-third of Södra's pulp production is sold to China and that around 80% of the cooperative's sales are exported. As a result, developments far beyond Sweden have a direct impact on member returns.

Executives from Södra Cell explained that China is rapidly expanding its domestic pulp production capacity through integrated pulp and paper complexes. While the country remains a major buyer of market pulp, it is simultaneously becoming a stronger competitor.

This shift could gradually reduce China's dependence on imported pulp and force global producers to compete more aggressively for market share elsewhere.

South American eucalyptus pulp intensifies competition

Management also highlighted the rapid expansion of eucalyptus pulp production in South America as a growing concern.

New capacity in countries such as Brazil is generating increasing export volumes, with producers seeking customers in Europe and North America. As a result, eucalyptus pulp is entering markets traditionally dominated by northern softwood pulp.

Henrik Wettergren delivered perhaps the most striking statement of the AGM when he acknowledged that northern producers cannot compete with eucalyptus pulp on cost.

Instead, Södra must rely on the superior technical properties of softwood fibres, including strength and performance in specialised applications. However, customers facing cost pressures are increasingly willing to substitute cheaper fibre whenever product performance remains acceptable.

This creates what industry observers often describe as a "good enough" challenge: eucalyptus pulp may not match softwood pulp in every application, but it may increasingly satisfy customer requirements at a lower cost.

Housing construction no longer viewed as the industry's rescue

The AGM also revealed a significant shift in thinking within Södra's wood products business.

For years, forest industry executives have anticipated that housing construction would eventually recover and restore demand for sawn timber. At this year's meeting, however, Södra's leadership appeared far less confident that residential construction would provide a near-term solution.

Instead, management pointed to growth opportunities in other sectors, including defence-related projects, correctional facilities, data centres, logistics buildings and renovation activity.

The implication was clear: relying on a return of traditional housing demand may no longer be enough to restore profitability.

Premium products become increasingly important

Faced with growing competition in both pulp and timber markets, Södra repeatedly emphasised the need to move beyond commodity production.

Management argued that competing solely on volume and cost is becoming increasingly difficult as lower-cost producers expand globally. Future competitiveness will therefore depend on premium products, customer relationships, traceability, sustainability credentials and higher levels of processing.

Executives stressed that the cooperative must identify applications where customers are willing to pay for performance advantages rather than simply seeking the lowest-cost fibre or timber products available.

Strong finances provide time, but not a solution

Despite the concerns raised during the AGM, Södra remains financially strong.

The cooperative benefits from modern industrial assets, a substantial raw material base, industrial expertise and the support of approximately 52,000 forest-owning members.

However, management acknowledged that a strong balance sheet can only buy time. If profitability remains under pressure for an extended period, financial reserves alone will not resolve the underlying issues.

The cooperative is also investing in higher-value products derived from forest biomass, including lignin, tannin and biomethanol. While these initiatives may strengthen earnings, executives suggested that the long-term competitiveness of the core pulp and timber businesses remains the decisive factor.

A test of the cooperative model

Perhaps the most sensitive issue discussed at the AGM concerned the implications for Södra's members.

Unlike publicly listed forest products companies, Södra exists to create value from the timber supplied by its members. If global competition places sustained pressure on industry margins, the relationship between timber prices, member returns and industrial profitability could become increasingly complex.

As a result, the cooperative may face difficult strategic choices regarding investments, member incentives and long-term competitiveness.

The overall tone of the AGM was not one of panic. Management presented a clear strategy for adapting to changing market conditions and emphasised the strengths of Södra's industrial base.

Nevertheless, the message was unmistakable: while the 2012 downturn tested Södra's finances and cost structure, the challenges emerging in 2026 may test the long-term viability of the industry's traditional business model.

For Södra, the question is no longer simply when markets will recover, but how the cooperative can remain competitive in a world where Chinese self-sufficiency, expanding eucalyptus pulp production and changing demand patterns are reshaping the global forest products sector.

Södra’s management used the cooperative’s Annual General Meeting on 3 June 2026 to deliver an unusually candid assessment of the challenges facing the Swedish forest industry, arguing that the current crisis may differ fundamentally from the severe downturn the group … Continue reading →

[5204

post-99055","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
