Swiss timber company Schilliger has started producing wood fibre insulation boards at its new facility in K\u00fcssnacht am Rigi, restoring domestic production of the product in Switzerland several years after the closure of the country's last wood fibre insulation board plant in Cham.<\/p>\n
The project is operated through Lignatherm AG, a subsidiary established by Schilliger Holz in 2020. The company originally planned to locate production in Perlen but later selected a site in the F\u00e4nn industrial zone near K\u00fcssnacht am Rigi.<\/p>\n
The location was chosen in part because of its proximity to Schilliger's existing operations in Haltikon. Wood chips generated at the nearby facility are used as the main raw material for insulation board production, reducing transport distances within the supply chain.<\/p>\n
Investment exceeds CHF 100 million<\/strong><\/p>\n Construction began in February 2024 on a site covering approximately 20,000 m\u00b2.<\/p>\n According to the company, the project represents an investment of more than CHF 100 million (approximately EUR 107 million).<\/p>\n The facility includes a production and processing plant, a high-bay warehouse, wood chip storage facilities and a biomass energy plant. A wood-fired power plant with a thermal output of around 20 MW supplies heat and steam required for manufacturing.<\/p>\n The site also includes a photovoltaic installation with more than 2,000 solar panels and an installed capacity of 900 kWp.<\/p>\n First board produced in May<\/strong><\/p>\n Commissioning of the various systems has taken place in stages over recent weeks. The first wood fibre insulation board was produced on 21 May.<\/p>\n The company is now gradually increasing output while adjusting production processes and quality management systems. Commercial deliveries are expected to begin once the start-up phase has been completed.<\/p>\n Certification procedures for international markets are also underway.<\/p>\n Focus on Swiss timber-based insulation products<\/strong><\/p>\n The facility currently manufactures rigid wood fibre insulation boards with densities of 110, 140 and 180 kg\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n Lignatherm also offers flexible wood fibre insulation boards with a density of 50 kg\/m\u00b3 as well as blown insulation products. These products are currently sourced externally, although the company said the facility has been designed to allow future expansion should production of additional insulation products be added at the site.<\/p>\n Wood fibre insulation boards are widely used in timber construction, renovation and extension projects.
