The worsening outlook has raised concerns about mill closures, restructuring measures and a growing risk of insolvencies if market conditions fail to improve.

According to the German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association (DeSH), the sector continues to struggle with weak construction activity, high raw material and energy costs, and increasing restrictions on international trade. The association says the economic situation has deteriorated significantly since the beginning of the year, while the spring recovery expected by many producers has failed to materialize.

Persistently weak construction demand in Germany and other key markets continues to limit lumber consumption, while geopolitical tensions and trade barriers are restricting export opportunities. At the same time, European competitors are consolidating through acquisitions and restructuring, increasing pressure on German producers already operating under difficult conditions.

Lumber production could fall another 10%

Germany's lumber industry already recorded its weakest year in a decade in 2025. According to surveys conducted within the industry, structural lumber production could decline by a further 9-10% this year if current market conditions remain unchanged.

The association warns that such a decline would have consequences far beyond production volumes. Fewer shifts, increased short-time working arrangements and the gradual reduction of industrial capacity are expected if demand fails to recover.

The impact would be particularly severe in rural regions where sawmills are often among the largest industrial employers and a key source of local value creation. Reduced production would affect not only sawmills, but also harvesting contractors, transport companies, forest service providers and downstream wood-processing industries.

If current market conditions persist, the number of insolvencies in Germany's sawmill sector could rise during the coming months as companies struggle to absorb high production costs, weak construction demand and limited export opportunities. Smaller and medium-sized operators are considered particularly vulnerable as margins continue to shrink and capacity utilization remains below normal levels.

Construction sector remains in crisis mode

Although wood supply has improved since the beginning of the year, Germany's construction sector continues to weigh heavily on lumber demand.

Last summer, many sawmills struggled to secure sufficient logs from forests. Since then, increased harvesting by forest owners has significantly improved supply conditions. The larger volume of harvested timber has also contributed to lower roundwood prices in some regions, improving availability for processors.

However, stronger log supply has not translated into stronger lumber markets. Germany's construction sector remains in crisis mode, with housing activity continuing to decline.

The number of completed housing units in 2025 fell to its lowest level since 2012. While building permits have recently shown modest increases, the industry views them only as a small sign of stabilization rather than evidence of a broader recovery.

The hoped-for spring upturn failed to materialize this year, leaving many producers facing another period of weak order intake and cautious purchasing behavior from customers.

Germany losing competitiveness

Rising costs continue to erode the competitiveness of German sawmills.

According to DeSH, domestic producers face some of the highest raw material and energy costs in Europe. These structural disadvantages are pushing production costs higher and making it increasingly difficult for German companies to compete with producers in other European wood-industry countries.

The growing cost burden is forcing many companies to reduce production despite improved wood availability. Political conflicts and trade disputes are adding further pressure by slowing international trade and reducing opportunities in export markets.

While some European producers have been able to offset weak domestic demand through exports, German sawmills face a more difficult environment due to higher operating costs and weaker competitiveness.

A key industry for Germany's forest sector

The German sawmill and wood industry remains one of the country's most important forest-based industries. With more than 2,000 companies, around 30,000 employees and annual turnover of up to €14 billion, it forms the backbone of industrial wood processing in Germany.

Germany is Europe's largest producer of structural lumber and ranks fifth worldwide. Domestic sawmills provide the raw material base for major industries including construction, packaging and further wood processing.

Acting as the link between forests and wood-consuming industries, the sector plays a crucial role in maintaining value chains based on domestic raw materials. The industry supports extensive upstream and downstream activities, from forest management and harvesting to manufacturing and distribution.

DeSH calls for crisis summit

In response to the deteriorating outlook, DeSH is calling for a crisis summit involving policymakers and industry leaders.

The association argues that Germany needs a coordinated strategy to secure long-term wood supply, preserve international competitiveness and safeguard domestic processing capacity. Without measures to improve market conditions, the sector risks further production cuts, capacity reductions and growing financial pressure across the entire forest products supply chain.

For many sawmills, the second half of 2026 could prove decisive. With construction demand still weak, costs remaining elevated and export markets facing increasing uncertainty, the industry is warning that the current downturn could develop into a broader restructuring cycle, accompanied by a rise in insolvencies and the permanent loss of processing capacity in parts of Germany.

[5204

post-98954","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
