Sawmills across Northern and Central Europe continue to seek higher prices, supported by elevated sawlog costs and tightening spruce availability, while buyers remain cautious and generally purchase only against immediate requirements.<\/p>\n<p>According to market participants contacted by Global Wood Markets Info, demand has improved modestly compared with the first quarter, but distributors remain reluctant to build inventories. Order books have stabilized in several markets, yet residential construction activity across Europe continues to limit any significant upward movement in lumber prices.<\/p>\n<p>\"Enquiries are better than they were earlier in the year, but customers are still buying only what they need,\" one Central European trader said.<\/p>\n<p>Nordic producers continue to focus on recovering higher raw material costs. Standard kiln-dried spruce lumber is currently offered at around \u20ac220-270\/m\u00b3 ex-works, while kiln-dried pine products are generally available between \u20ac230 and \u20ac290\/m\u00b3 depending on dimensions and specifications. Negotiations remain difficult, with buyers comparing multiple supply alternatives before committing to purchases. Nevertheless, producers remain unwilling to lower prices significantly due to continued pressure from sawlog markets.<\/p>\n<p>Across Central and Eastern Europe, structural grades continue to outperform commodity lumber products. Strength-graded C24 lumber remains in demand, while selected structural and planed products continue to achieve premiums over standard construction grades.<\/p>\n<p>Western European markets continue to report the highest lumber prices in Europe. Germany remains the strongest mainstream market, with construction-grade spruce lumber assessed between \u20ac320 and \u20ac340\/m\u00b3 delivered. French prices remain slightly below German levels, while Benelux continues to command premiums for planed construction lumber and specialty products. In the United Kingdom, most construction-grade spruce products remain within a relatively stable range of \u20ac295-315\/m\u00b3 delivered.<\/p>\n<p>The spread between Nordic production-level offers and delivered prices in Western European markets remains substantial, reflecting freight costs, secondary processing, distribution margins and stronger pricing power closer to end users.<\/p>\n<p>One of the defining features of the current market continues to be the disconnect between modest demand and persistently high sawlog prices. German spruce sawlogs are currently assessed at \u20ac125-145\/m\u00b3, while Austrian spruce sawlogs are generally reported between \u20ac110 and \u20ac128\/m\u00b3 depending on quality and region. In Finland, average spruce sawlog prices have increased to approximately \u20ac81\/m\u00b3, while Swedish spruce sawlogs remain close to \u20ac104-105\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>Several market participants noted that current lumber prices are being supported primarily by raw material costs rather than any meaningful improvement in demand fundamentals.<\/p>\n<p>Market participants also continue to highlight spruce availability as a growing structural concern across Northern and Central Europe. Years of bark beetle damage, storm harvesting and changing forest conditions have reduced available spruce resources in several regions. For the time being, subdued demand is masking the impact, but traders believe the situation could become more visible once construction activity begins to recover.<\/p>\n<p>Most industry contacts expect the third quarter to remain relatively stable. Demand is described as moderate, inventories balanced and production disciplined. While sentiment has improved compared with the beginning of the year, few participants describe current conditions as a genuine recovery.<\/p>\n<p>High sawlog prices and tightening spruce availability are expected to continue supporting lumber values during the coming months.
