Estonia's timber market showed signs of stabilization in May 2026, with softwood sawlog prices largely unchanged after the strong increases recorded over the past year. While pulpwood and fuelwood prices continued to rise, sawlog markets remained relatively steady, suggesting that the rapid price growth seen during 2025 has given way to a more balanced market environment.<\/p>\n

According to the latest market review published by the Estonian Private Forest Union (Eesti Erametsaliit), pine sawlog prices increased by just 0.2% during May, while spruce sawlog prices remained unchanged. Compared with February, however, prices have eased across all major softwood assortments. Pine sawlogs were down 3.3% from February levels, pine small sawlogs 5.9%, spruce sawlogs 0.4% and spruce small sawlogs 1.2%.<\/p>\n

Despite the recent correction, softwood sawlog prices remain significantly higher than a year ago. In May, spruce sawlogs averaged EUR 109.54\/m\u00b3, up 10.8% from May 2025, while pine sawlogs reached EUR 104.57\/m\u00b3, an increase of 9.2% year-on-year. Spruce small sawlogs edged 0.5% higher compared with a year earlier, whereas pine small sawlogs declined by 2.5%.<\/p>\n

The weakest performance continued to be seen in lower-value softwood assortments. Pine and spruce pallet logs were more than 21% below year-earlier levels, reflecting weaker demand from packaging and industrial wood markets.<\/p>\n

Outside the sawlog segment, hardwood markets remained under pressure, particularly for alder and aspen logs, while pulpwood prices continued to rise. The Estonian Private Forest Union noted that summer maintenance shutdowns and holiday-related interruptions at mills could create temporary marketing difficulties in the coming weeks, although lower harvesting activity during the summer period is also expected to reduce timber supply.<\/p>\n
