There is one group in Finland that has little reason to complain about the timber market: forest owners.<\/p>\n
Timber sales generated a record EUR 3.7 billion in stumpage revenues in 2025, according to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). Adjusted for inflation, that was 3% more than a year earlier and the highest figure ever recorded.<\/p>\n
The number matters because most of the money stayed where the trees grow.<\/p>\n
About EUR 3.1 billion flowed directly to private forest owners, who received 84% of all stumpage revenues. In regions such as North Savo, North Karelia and Central Finland, forestry remains one of the largest sources of private income and economic activity. When timber prices rise, the effect is visible far beyond the forest sector itself. More money reaches local contractors, machinery dealers, retailers and service businesses.<\/p>\n
The latest figures are another reminder of how dramatically the timber market has changed over the past few years.<\/p>\n
Not long ago, many European forest owners were complaining about weak log prices. Today, the conversation is very different. Pine and spruce sawlog prices remained at unusually high levels throughout much of 2025, allowing sellers to capture returns that would have seemed difficult to imagine only a few years ago.<\/p>\n
For forest owners, higher prices are simple mathematics. A stand that was worth one amount five years ago is worth considerably more today.<\/p>\n
For manufacturers, however, the same trend looks less attractive.<\/p>\n
Every euro added to the price of a log eventually becomes a cost for a sawmill, plywood producer or pulp mill. Finland's forest industry sells into global markets where competitors often buy raw material at lower prices. What is good news in the forest can quickly become a headache at the mill gate.<\/p>\n
That tension is increasingly shaping the Nordic timber market.<\/p>\n
Forest owners naturally want to maximise returns, while processors need access to competitively priced logs if they are to remain profitable. Neither side can prosper for long without the other. The question is not whether timber prices should be high or low, but whether the relationship between log costs and finished product prices remains sustainable.<\/p>\n
So far, Finland appears to be managing that balance reasonably well.<\/p>\n
The country\u2019s forest industry still generates roughly EUR 12\u201313 billion in export revenues each year, accounting for nearly one-fifth of Finland\u2019s goods exports. Around 80,000 jobs depend directly or indirectly on the forestry value chain.<\/p>\n
Those figures explain why record stumpage revenues attract attention well beyond the forestry sector.<\/p>\n
The story is not simply that forest owners earned more money in 2025. It is that Finland\u2019s forests continue to generate wealth on a scale few industries can match. While many European sectors are struggling with slow growth and weak investment, forests are still delivering income, exports and employment.<\/p>\n
For private forest owners, 2025 will be remembered as a record year.<\/p>\n
The bigger question is whether timber prices can stay near current levels without eroding the competitiveness of the industries that ultimately buy the wood. That is the balance the Finnish forest sector will be watching closely in the years ahead.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
