This indicates that the decline was not caused by a broad fall in unit prices, but rather by weaker volumes and changes in destination mix.

The European Union remained the most stable outlet for Finnish softwood lumber. Export value to EU destinations increased slightly, despite a small decline in volume. Germany, Estonia and the Netherlands were among the stronger European markets.

Outside the EU, the picture was more mixed. North Africa recorded a sharp decline, mainly due to weaker shipments to Egypt, Morocco and Algeria. Exports to Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom were also lower year-on-year. North America increased from a smaller base, supported mainly by higher shipments to the United States.

Finland softwood lumber exports: January–March overview

Metric

Jan–Mar 2025

Jan–Mar 2026

Change

Export value

€373.3M

€338.6M

-9.3%

Export volume

1,486,602 m³

1,314,182 m³

-11.6%

Average export value

€251/m³

€258/m³

+2.6%

Regional performance

The EU remained the largest destination group, accounting for more than half of Finland’s softwood lumber export value in the period.
