Finland\u2019s softwood lumber exports were lower in January\u2013March 2026 compared with the same period last year, with the decline mainly driven by lower shipment volumes.<\/p>\n

Based on Eurostat data, exports reached \u20ac338.6 million<\/strong>, down 9.3%<\/strong> from \u20ac373.3 million<\/strong> in January\u2013March 2025. Export volume fell by 11.6%<\/strong>, from 1.49 million m\u00b3<\/strong> to 1.31 million m\u00b3<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The average export value increased slightly, from around \u20ac251\/m\u00b3<\/strong> to \u20ac258\/m\u00b3<\/strong>. This indicates that the decline was not caused by a broad fall in unit prices, but rather by weaker volumes and changes in destination mix.<\/p>\n

The European Union remained the most stable outlet for Finnish softwood lumber. Export value to EU destinations increased slightly, despite a small decline in volume. Germany, Estonia and the Netherlands were among the stronger European markets.<\/p>\n

Outside the EU, the picture was more mixed. North Africa recorded a sharp decline, mainly due to weaker shipments to Egypt, Morocco and Algeria. Exports to Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom were also lower year-on-year. North America increased from a smaller base, supported mainly by higher shipments to the United States.<\/p>\n

Regional performance<\/h3>\n

The EU remained the largest destination group, accounting for more than half of Finland\u2019s softwood lumber export value in the period. North Africa remained important by volume, but lower average values and weaker shipments weighed on the total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Estonia was the largest destination by value, followed by Egypt, the United Kingdom and Germany. Market signal<\/h3>\n

The January\u2013March data point to a weaker start to the year for Finland\u2019s softwood lumber exports. The main pressure came from lower volumes in North Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the EU market remained relatively stable, and the average export value increased slightly. This suggests that Finnish exporters are facing weaker demand in some external markets, rather than a broad-based price collapse.<\/p>\n

For the next reporting period, the key destinations to watch are Egypt, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Saudi Arabia and the United States.<\/p>\n
