{"id":98881,"date":"2026-06-02T06:41:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T06:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/?p=98881"},"modified":"2026-06-02T08:19:06","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T08:19:06","slug":"japan-is-buying-less-lumber-from-europe-canada-and-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/japan-is-buying-less-lumber-from-europe-canada-and-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan is buying less lumber from Europe, Canada And Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 1.6; color: #1f2933;\">\n<p>Japan\u2019s softwood lumber imports fell in the first four months of 2026, with lower volumes recorded from the country\u2019s main supplying regions.<\/p>\n<p>According to Japan\u2019s Forestry Agency data based on Ministry of Finance trade statistics, Japan imported <strong>1.06 million m\u00b3<\/strong> of softwood lumber in January\u2013April 2026, down <strong>9%<\/strong> from <strong>1.17 million m\u00b3<\/strong> in the same period of 2025.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In April alone, Japan imported <strong>251,000 m\u00b3<\/strong> of softwood lumber. This was <strong>1%<\/strong> higher than in March, but still <strong>27%<\/strong> below April 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The decline was across the main suppliers. Imports from the European Union, Canada and Russia were all lower year-on-year in April. EU shipments increased month-on-month, but remained below last year\u2019s level. Canada and Russia also stayed sharply below April 2025.<\/p>\n<p>For January\u2013April as a whole, the European Union remained Japan\u2019s largest supplier, followed by Canada and Russia. The EU shipped <strong>616,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, down <strong>4%<\/strong> year-on-year. Within the EU, Sweden was broadly stable, while Finland was lower.<\/p>\n<p>Canadian shipments fell to <strong>196,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, down <strong>13%<\/strong> year-on-year, while Russian shipments declined to <strong>153,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, down <strong>19%<\/strong>. EU shipments represented about <strong>58%<\/strong> of total January\u2013April imports, compared with <strong>18%<\/strong> for Canada and <strong>14%<\/strong> for Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Within the EU, Sweden and Finland remained the two largest reported suppliers. Sweden shipped <strong>240,000 m\u00b3<\/strong> in January\u2013April 2026, unchanged from a year earlier, while Finland shipped <strong>229,000 m\u00b3<\/strong>, down <strong>5%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The April data show a short-term recovery in EU shipments from March, but year-on-year volumes remained lower. Japan\u2019s buying from Europe has therefore not returned to last year\u2019s level, despite Europe keeping a strong position in the market.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.4; margin: 24px 0 12px 0; color: #243b53;\">Freight costs add pressure to long-haul supply<\/h3>\n<p>The lower import volumes come as freight costs are becoming more difficult for long-haul suppliers.<\/p>\n<p>Major container carriers have introduced emergency fuel surcharges of around <strong>USD 50\u2013200 per container<\/strong> on long-haul routes after the rise in crude oil prices linked to Middle East tensions. This is relevant for lumber shipped from Europe to Japan, where freight is a significant part of landed cost.<\/p>\n<p>European suppliers have already been informed of the surcharges, according to market reports, and some are reconsidering second-quarter contract prices.
