The Austrian timber market is facing growing pressure after snow and wind damage earlier this year added large volumes of salvage timber to an already weak market environment.<\/p>\n

Following snow breakage in February and windthrow events in March, many forest owners in Styria are struggling to sell harvested timber as sawmills operate with high inventories and limited intake capacity. Around 4.5 million m\u00b3 of timber are harvested annually in Styria, with roughly 80% processed domestically, but current market conditions have sharply reduced buying activity.<\/p>\n

According to the latest Holzmarktbericht published by LK \u00d6sterreich, demand for softwood sawlogs weakened further in May due to the continuing slowdown in construction activity and broader economic uncertainty. Rising energy prices linked to the conflict with Iran are also weighing on companies and consumers across Austria.<\/p>\n

The report said softwood sawlog demand declined noticeably in recent weeks, while high timber availability and generally well-stocked sawmills left little room for additional purchases. In Lower Austria and storm-damaged parts of Styria, timber stored in roadside forest yards is reportedly being transported only slowly because of restricted sawmill deliveries.<\/p>\n

Prices have weakened accordingly. Spruce sawlogs (B, 2b+) are currently trading between \u20ac110 and \u20ac128\/FMO depending on region and quality.<\/p>\n

The market for pine is described as particularly difficult. Forestry authorities warned that rapid transport is necessary to avoid blue stain and further quality losses caused by current weather conditions.<\/p>\n

At the same time, bark beetle risks continue to increase. Austria\u2019s spring rainfall deficit remains severe, while large quantities of storm- and snow-damaged timber still remain in forests, creating favorable breeding conditions for infestations.<\/p>\n

Forestry authorities said the priority now must be forest hygiene: damaged and infested timber should be removed quickly, and stands should be monitored closely for fresh bark beetle attacks throughout the warmer months.<\/p>\n

While the sawlog market remains weak, conditions for industrial timber have improved somewhat. Austrian paper, pulp and panel mills are reportedly holding below-average inventories of softwood industrial roundwood, leading to firmer demand and modest price increases in some regions.<\/p>\n

The energy wood market remains mixed depending on the region. In Lower Austria, the extended heating season continues to support consumption, while in Upper Austria sales outside long-term contracts remain difficult.<\/p>\n
