With a sales increase in the timber trade in March 2026, the German Timber Trade Federation (GD Holz) draws a positive conclusion from the latest results of its monthly internal benchmarking. Although participants also indicate that this increase is partly due to rising prices, the overall trend can be described as stable. \"We are seeing that the timber trade is increasingly stabilizing after the difficult years. We are again recording growth in key segments. This is a positive sign,\" explains GD Holz Managing Director Thomas Goebel.<\/p>\n
The latest company comparison shows that sales in several product groups have improved compared to the previous year. Planed timber, wood-based materials, flooring, garden timber, and services saw double-digit growth in March, followed closely by sawn timber and building components. Cumulatively, for the first three months of 2026, this results in a sales increase of 2.7 percent.<\/p>\n
Subdued expectations for the near future<\/strong><\/p>\n Despite a strong March, expectations remain subdued. In both wholesale and retail sectors, a majority of companies anticipate stable or even lower business performance in the coming months, while a quarter expect sales to increase. Much of the current sales trend is price-driven, with price adjustments accounting for approximately 45 percent of the revenue change, while pure volume increases represent just over a quarter. Another quarter of the growth results from a combination of price and volume increases.<\/p>\n \u201cA sustainable recovery will only occur when sales volumes also pick up noticeably again,\u201d said Goebel, adding: \u201cOverall, our member companies are optimistic. Many assume that the situation will continue to stabilize. Nevertheless, decisive action is needed from policymakers who tackle the economic challenges of these times with entrepreneurial expertise and set the appropriate guidelines, such as a significant reduction in high energy costs. The federal government has given its word on this.\u201d<\/p>\n The developments in March 2026 represent a continuation of a stabilization trend.
