The closure of Vida's sawmills in Orrefors and Urshult is seen as part of a larger restructuring in the Swedish sawmill industry. At the same time, analysts point out that the situation is even tougher in several other European countries.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have seen these changes over the past year and also in previous years. Some sawmills have closed down and others have changed their location,\u201d says Christian Nielsen, a market analyst for wood products at the Swedish Forest Industry Federation (Skogsindustrierna) in a recent interview.<\/p>\n
He says that the sawmill industry is in a phase of change.<\/p>\n
''Sweden has had a very strong sawmill industry for a long time. But now we may need to rationalize, or ensure that we have the right conditions,'' says Christian Nielsen.<\/p>\n
However, it is unclear exactly which sawmills will remain or be closed, according to Christian Nielsen.<\/p>\n
''I believe that the Swedish sawmill industry will remain at approximately this level for the next five to ten years'', he says.<\/p>\n
Worse in other countries<\/strong><\/p>\n Christian Nielsen also says that Sweden is not alone in this development \u2013 \u200b\u200bin several other European countries the situation is tougher.<\/p>\n ''It is much tougher in other countries. For example, we see in Central Europe and Germany where there is a large deficit in spruce, due to heavy attacks from the spruce bark beetle.
