At the same time, however, expectations for the coming six months weakened to minus 32.2 points from minus 29.4, reflecting growing concerns about costs and demand.

The German timber sector continues to suffer from weak construction activity, subdued furniture demand and pressure on industrial consumption across Europe. While some parts of the market are beginning to stabilise, the recovery remains uneven.

Prefabricated timber construction remains the clearest exception. Over the past three months, companies in the segment were the only ones to rate their current business situation positively, supported by improving residential construction indicators and a gradual increase in housing permits.

Approvals for detached and semi-detached houses rose by 15.6% in the first two months of 2026, while permits for multi-unit residential buildings increased by 20.4% over the same period, helping support sentiment in timber-frame construction and building-related segments.

Other parts of the industry remain under heavier pressure.

According to the HDH survey, sawmills, furniture producers and wood packaging companies continue to report particularly weak conditions. The furniture sector remains the most fragile segment, affected both by lower housing completions and cautious consumer spending.

The worsening geopolitical environment has added another layer of uncertainty. Following the outbreak of the Iran war, companies are increasingly concerned about higher energy prices, rising transport costs and the possibility of further supply-chain disruption across European manufacturing industries.

For timber manufacturers, these pressures arrive at a difficult moment. Many companies are already dealing with elevated wood procurement costs, expensive financing conditions and weak pricing power in finished products.

The industry is also preparing for additional compliance costs linked to the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which many companies fear could create further administrative burdens and sourcing complications during a period of already fragile demand.

Despite the weak overall climate, the latest figures suggest the German timber industry may be approaching a turning point rather than continuing the sharp deterioration seen through much of 2025. But for now, most companies still expect conditions to remain difficult well into the second half of 2026.

[5204,5812

post-98839","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news","category-global-trends

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
