Total imports reached 4.865 million m³, down 6.8% year-on-year, while the import value rose slightly to $1.06 billion. Compared with March, however, volumes increased by 4% and value by 6.3%, suggesting that demand had begun to improve after the first-quarter slowdown.

The split between logs and lumber was clear. Log imports rose to 2.98 million m³, up 1.7% year-on-year and 7.9% from March. Their import value increased by 6.9% year-on-year to about $500 million, while the average log import price was 5.1% higher than a year earlier.

Lumber imports remained much weaker. China imported 1.885 million m³ of lumber in April, down 17.8% year-on-year and 1.7% from March. The value of lumber imports fell by 3.5% year-on-year to $570 million, even though the average import price rose by 17.3%. This suggests that the market is absorbing higher-priced material, but not in larger volumes.

Softwood products showed the sharpest weakness. China’s softwood timber imports fell by 12.5% year-on-year to 3.171 million m³. Softwood log imports were broadly stable at 2.204 million m³, up 0.9%, but softwood lumber imports dropped sharply by 32.8% to 967,000 m³. Average prices moved in opposite directions: softwood log prices rose slightly by 0.8%, while softwood lumber prices increased by 3.7%.

The supplier mix also changed. New Zealand and Russia remained China’s two largest timber suppliers, but their trends diverged. New Zealand shipments rose slightly by 1.7%, while Russian supplies fell by 32.5% to 884,000 m³. Imports from the United States recovered strongly, with U.S. log arrivals rising to 106,000 m³, up 78% year-on-year after the sharp fall seen in April 2025.

Other suppliers also gained ground. Thailand, Canada and the United States increased shipments to China by 7.2%, 31% and 23.6%, respectively. The Solomon Islands recorded the strongest growth among the top suppliers, with exports to China reaching 117,000 m³, up 117.7% from a low base last year. By contrast, imports from Japan, Belarus and the Philippines declined.

There were also clear changes by species. Eucalyptus log imports nearly doubled year-on-year, although average prices fell by 6.1%. Okoume log imports tripled. North American hardwood log imports increased by 20.1%, while North American hardwood lumber imports rose by 96.9%. Beech lumber imports increased by 8.9%, while beech log imports fell by 41.2%. Thai rubberwood imports rose by 7.1% year-on-year, with the average price up 10.7%.

For January–April 2026, China imported 17.046 million m³ of timber, down 10.9% year-on-year. Import value fell by 6.6% to about $3.65 billion. Logs accounted for 59.5% of total imports, with volumes down 7.7% to 10.144 million m³. Lumber imports reached 6.903 million m³, down 15.1%.

The April data suggests that China’s timber demand may have bottomed out in the first quarter, after the effects of the Spring Festival, policy adjustments and destocking. Construction, furniture and packaging activity appear to be gradually returning to more normal levels. Still, the recovery remains uneven. Logs are recovering faster than lumber, and future growth is likely to come more from higher unit prices than from a strong expansion in import volumes.

<table style="width: 100%;
