The decision affects around 75 employees directly and removes approximately 265,000\u2013330,000 m\u00b3 of annual lumber production capacity from the Swedish market.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"538\" data-end=\"969\">Vida said the imbalance between sawmill capacity and access to raw material in G\u00f6taland has worsened over time, making it increasingly difficult to operate and develop all 15 of the group\u2019s sawmills. According to CEO Karl-Johan L\u00f6wenadler, the company will instead focus on fewer, larger and more efficient units in order to strengthen competitiveness and adapt to long-term market conditions.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1420\">The closures highlight a structural problem that has been developing in southern Sweden for several years. Harvesting volumes in the region are no longer sufficient to support the large expansion in sawmill capacity that took place during previous periods of strong lumber demand. Swedish forestry outlook studies had already warned that future timber supply in G\u00f6taland would tighten as forests matured unevenly and harvesting levels remained high.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1422\" data-end=\"1807\">Spruce availability has become particularly strained following extensive bark beetle damage in recent years, while slower forest growth and increasing environmental considerations have further limited accessible raw material. At the same time, many sawmills in southern Sweden expanded production during the construction boom years, creating stronger competition for available sawlogs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"2284\">The shutdown of the two Vida mills therefore reflects not only weaker short-term market conditions, but also a broader adjustment within the Nordic sawmill industry as producers attempt to align production capacity with long-term fibre availability. The reduction in output is expected to lower annual sawlog consumption by roughly 650,000\u2013700,000 m\u00b3 and reduce sawmill chip supply to the pulp and bioenergy sectors by around 200,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2286\" data-end=\"2689\">The Urshult sawmill mainly processes spruce and has annual lumber production capacity of about 185,000 m\u00b3, while Orrefors processes pine with capacity of around 145,000 m\u00b3. Together, the mills employ approximately 75 workers, though Swedish media reports indicated that around 100 people could ultimately be affected depending on contractors and related activities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2691\" data-end=\"3130\">Vida said the decision was not driven by financial distress but by the need to adapt its industrial structure to future market realities. The company stated that it still sees strong long-term potential for wood products and plans to continue investing in its remaining operations. Employees affected by the closures will be offered transition support, dialogue with unions and financial compensation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3132\" data-end=\"3429\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Vida is majority owned by <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Canfor Corporation<\/span><\/span>, which confirmed that after the closures the group will continue operating 13 sawmills across central and southern Sweden together with its packaging, logistics and further-processing businesses.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":98786,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"Default","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"inline_featured_image":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5204],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-98785","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
