China\u2019s timber imports rebounded sharply in March 2026 following the seasonal slowdown earlier in the year, although volumes remained significantly below last year\u2019s levels as weak domestic demand and difficult market conditions continued affecting the sector.<\/p>\n

According to newly released customs data, China imported 4.678 million m\u00b3 of timber in March, down 14.2% year-over-year but up 45.5% compared with February. Import value reached approximately USD 1 billion, declining 9.1% year-over-year while increasing 44.3% month-over-month.<\/p>\n

The rebound was mainly linked to seasonal restocking and the start of the spring construction period, although the year-over-year decline highlighted continuing weakness in underlying demand.<\/p>\n

Average log prices increased 3.7% year-over-year despite lower volumes, while average import prices for softwood lumber rose 8.8% compared with March 2025, extending gains for a second consecutive month.<\/p>\n

The March figures also showed significant changes among China\u2019s main timber suppliers. New Zealand and Russia remained China\u2019s two largest suppliers, although both recorded declining export volumes. Russian shipments fell particularly sharply, dropping 29.4% year-over-year from 1.284 million m\u00b3 to 907,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Several other suppliers increased exports to China. Timber shipments from Thailand rose 3.6% year-over-year, while Papua New Guinea and Canada recorded increases of 15.1% and 16.7%, respectively.<\/p>\n
