At the same time, exporters are adjusting to weaker demand across parts of Europe and Asia, while uncertainty surrounding Donald Trump’s trade policies in the United States has added another layer of instability to already unsettled global markets.

“It looks like this year will also be a time of great reflection and questions in the timber industry,” said Kristaps Klauss, executive director of the Latvian Timber Producers and Traders Association.

His comments captured the mood surrounding the gathering at Verems: cautious, uneasy, but not defeated.

For years, Latvia’s timber sector benefited from relatively predictable export conditions. European construction demand remained strong, energy prices were manageable and international logistics, despite periodic disruption, generally functioned well enough for manufacturers to plan years ahead.

That sense of predictability has weakened rapidly.

Today, timber producers across the Baltic region are spending more time thinking about shipping routes, freight surcharges and energy costs than expansion plans. Orders remain uneven in several export markets, while customers increasingly avoid large inventories and buy only what they immediately need.

Yet Klauss argued that periods like this may also create opportunities for companies willing to keep investing.

“Good sales periods and investment periods rarely coincide,” he said. “There is a fairly empty period in global markets for sales now, and — as long as financing is available — it is often the best moment for manufacturers to invest.”

The logic is straightforward. During weaker market cycles, production equipment becomes easier to obtain, suppliers become more flexible and factories are not overwhelmed by demand. Companies able to modernise during downturns may emerge stronger once markets recover.

That thinking increasingly shapes strategy across parts of northern Europe’s wood products sector. Rather than pursuing aggressive expansion, many producers are focusing on automation, energy efficiency and production quality while waiting for clearer signs of recovery in global construction markets.

Latvia’s timber industry still sees itself as internationally competitive despite the slowdown. Klauss pointed to construction plywood, softwood lumber and several specialised wood products where Latvian manufacturers continue to hold strong positions globally.

“We are among the best in the world in many products,” he said.

But strong products alone no longer guarantee stability.

Freight has become a central concern again for exporters throughout Europe’s timber sector. Shipping costs rose sharply following the escalation of tensions in the Gulf region, while uncertainty surrounding maritime logistics continues to affect long-distance trade. For manufacturers dependent on predictable export flows, volatility in transport markets now shapes business decisions almost as much as lumber prices themselves.

The slowdown in Asia has added further pressure. Demand growth that supported strong export activity in previous years has weakened, while construction markets across Europe remain subdued.

Even so, there was little sense at Verems that the industry expects a permanent decline. Instead, executives described a sector trying to position itself carefully for the next market cycle — investing selectively, controlling costs and waiting for global demand to stabilise.

The modernised Verems factory itself became part of that message: a sign that at least some Baltic manufacturers still believe the downturn will eventually pass.

[5204

post-98675","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
