More timber and furniture manufacturers in Poland are announcing production suspensions and mass layoffs. Industry representatives associated with the Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers have sent a letter to Prime Minister Donald Tusk and representatives of economic ministries, appealing for urgent support for the Polish furniture industry. Companies in this sector are being hit hard by high electricity and fuel costs, as well as rising prices for raw materials and components. The number of layoffs is estimated at tens of thousands.<\/p>\n

Ikea in Goleni\u00f3w, Black Red White (BRW) in Zamo\u015b\u0107 and Przeworsk, Zorka in Jelenia G\u00f3ra, and Steinpol in Wo\u0142\u00f3w. These are just a few examples from recent months of furniture companies limiting or liquidating production. This has led to mass layoffs. Data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) shows that over the past two years, as many as 22,000 people have lost their jobs in the furniture industry, with no end in sight.<\/p>\n

Furniture companies on the brink of collapse<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a special letter, the OIGPM appealed to the Prime Minister and representatives of key economic ministries for urgent support for the Polish furniture industry. The document was addressed to Prime Minister Donald Tusk, Minister of Finance and Economy Andrzej Doma\u0144ski, and Minister of Energy Mi\u0142osz Motyka.<\/p>\n

The Chamber highlights the deteriorating situation in this sector, which has long been a pillar of the Polish economy and a key component of domestic exports. Entrepreneurs emphasize that high electricity and fuel costs remain a particular burden, directly impacting production costs and competitiveness. Additional challenges include rising prices for raw materials and components, declining demand in international markets, and increasing pressure from foreign producers.<\/p>\n

The Chamber also points out that persistently unfavorable market conditions may lead to further weakening of the sector, reduced investment and job losses \u2013 especially in regions where the timber and furniture industry plays a key role.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe situation in the industry is difficult. Little has changed since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. In Europe, there's no climate for purchasing goods that aren't essential, and furniture isn't,\u201d says Micha\u0142 Strzelecki, director of OIGPM.<\/p>\n

The value of furniture sold in 2025 amounted to PLN 56.7 billion (\u20ac13.1 billion). This means that the Polish furniture industry recorded revenues approximately PLN 226 million (\u20ac52 million) lower compared to the previous year. The value of furniture sold in the last quarter of last year alone amounted to PLN 14.7 billion (\u20ac3.4 billion) (a decrease of approximately 3% year-on-year). In turn, in 2024, this value fell to PLN 64 billion (\u20ac14.8 billion) (a decrease of approximately 4% year-on-year). Furniture exports to Germany, the largest recipient of Polish products, fell by approximately 4% last year, while furniture imports from Turkey and China are increasing.<\/p>\n

Debts in the industry are growing<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sharp decline in orders is negatively impacting the financial health of Polish manufacturers, leading to an increase in the industry's outstanding debt, which, according to the BIG InfoMonitor Debtor Register and the BIK credit information database, reached nearly PLN 336 million (\u20ac77.5 million) at the end of January this year, nearly PLN 63 million (\u20ac14.5 million) (23%) more than a year earlier. Office and shop furniture manufacturers are in the most difficult situation, with unpaid debts increasing by 46% in just one year, exceeding PLN 118 million (\u20ac27.3 million).<\/p>\n

Kitchen furniture manufacturers are in a slightly better, though still challenging, situation. Their arrears have increased by 20%, totaling just over PLN 67 million (\u20ac15.5 million). The only group in this sector that hasn't seen an increase in overdue debt is mattress manufacturers, but they still represent a small percentage of the market. Nearly 2,900 furniture companies are experiencing problems with late payment, representing 5.6% of the entire industry, higher than the industry average.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the reasons for the furniture industry's financial difficulties is the high cost of raw materials, particularly wood-based panels, and growing competition from China, including in international markets, including Germany. This means that restricting wood exports outside the EU, which could worsen the condition of the wood sector, could simultaneously help domestic producers of furniture and wood products by providing them with a greater supply of raw materials and limiting their supply to competitors. However, the behavior of consumers, who are starting to save money during the economic slowdown and making their decisions based on price rather than quality, will be crucial for both industries,\u201d says Dr. Waldemar Rogowski, Chief Analyst at BIG InfoMonitor.<\/p>\n

Forte concentrates production<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amid the broader downturn, Forte SA is reorganising its production footprint. The company reported preliminary revenues of approximately PLN 1.21 billion (\u20ac280 million) for the 2025\/2026 financial year and has decided to concentrate cabinet furniture production in Suwa\u0142ki and Ostr\u00f3w Mazowiecka. The move is aimed at improving efficiency and profitability while maintaining production capacity aligned with market demand.<\/p>\n

Letter of rescue<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Donald Tusk and other ministers, the OIGPM appealed for systemic measures to support the stability of the industry. Among the most important demands were:<\/p>\n

-lower wholesale fuel prices;
\n-reducing electricity prices, which are currently among the highest in Europe and the world;
\n-introducing additional aid and protective measures that will help stabilize the situation and improve the condition of furniture enterprises.<\/p>\n

According to the Polish Chamber of Commerce of Furniture Manufacturers, a swift and decisive government response is essential to halt negative trends and ensure the continued development of\u2014one of the most important sectors of the Polish economy.
