Compared with March 2025, volumes were still down 14.2%. Import value followed the same pattern, totalling USD 1.0 billion, a decline of 9.1% year-on-year but a 44.3% increase month-on-month.<\/p>\n<p>Log imports reached 2.761 million m\u00b3, down 12.8% year-on-year but up 53.8% from February. Import value rose to USD 460 million (+9.6% year-on-year; +56.2% month-on-month), while the average price increased by 3.7%.<\/p>\n<p>Lumber imports totalled 1.917 million m\u00b3, a decrease of 16.2% compared with March last year, but 35.1% higher than in February. Import value declined 8.8% year-on-year to USD 540 million, while increasing 35.5% month-on-month. Imports from Russia dropped from 1.284 million m\u00b3 in March 2025 to 907,000 m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand, Papua New Guinea and Canada increased exports to China by 3.6%, 15.1% and 16.7% respectively. Papua New Guinea recorded a strong monthly rebound, with log shipments rising from 51,400 m\u00b3 in February to 210,000 m\u00b3 in March.<\/p>\n<p>The Republic of the Congo posted the highest growth rate among the top suppliers, with exports reaching 63,000 m\u00b3 (+39% year-on-year).<\/p>\n<p>Exports from the United States and Belarus declined by 34.2% and 17.4%, while the Philippines increased shipments by 25.7%. Japan remained stable, with a marginal increase of 0.9%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By wood type<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Softwood imports totalled 3.017 million m\u00b3 in March, down 18.6% year-on-year. The average price decreased slightly by 3.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Softwood logs reached 2.036 million m\u00b3 (-12.1%), while softwood lumber imports fell to 981,000 m\u00b3 (-29.5%).<\/p>\n<p>Eucalyptus log imports declined by 39.6%, while okoume logs increased by 50%. North American hardwood log imports dropped by 45.3%, whereas hardwood lumber imports rose by 55.9%.<\/p>\n<p>Meranti log imports from Papua New Guinea increased by 135.2%. Thailand\u2019s rubberwood exports rose 3.4% year-on-year and 79.2% compared with February, with average prices up 8.8%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>January\u2013March totals<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the first quarter of 2026, China imported 12.181 million m\u00b3 of timber, down 12.4% year-on-year. Import value reached USD 2.59 billion, a decrease of 9.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Timber and wood product exports declined by 14.5% in March, while cumulative growth for the first quarter slowed to 16%. Plywood exports fell 11% in March but remained up 24% over the quarter.
