Across its Asia\u2013North Europe network, MSC averages 12.6 port calls per full rotation, with the Britannia service reaching up to 20 ports per roundtrip. The approach reflects a strategy focused on direct port-to-port connections.<\/p>\n<p>This contrasts with the model adopted by the Gemini Cooperation, the alliance between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. Their network is structured around a hub-and-spoke system, with services on the same corridor averaging 7.3 port calls per rotation and a maximum of eight ports. For timber exporters and importers, the difference translates into a trade-off between more direct sailings and reliance on transhipment hubs.<\/p>\n<p>Freight rate signals for May remain mixed. MSC has set its Freight All Kinds rate from the Far East to North Europe at USD 4,500 per 40-foot container from 15 May, down from an earlier indication of USD 4,700. However, this remains well above the USD 3,500\/40\u2019 level announced by CMA CGM for the same route and timing.<\/p>\n<p>The gap between announced rates and actual market levels remains significant. Current spot rates tracked by the NYFI index are just below USD 2,200 per 40-foot container, while futures on the Intercontinental Exchange indicate around USD 2,675 for May, rising toward USD 2,900 by July. This spread is being closely monitored by market participants negotiating forward contracts, including those in timber and forest products.<\/p>\n<p>On the cost side, Ocean Network Express (ONE) has reduced its Emergency Fuel Surcharge. Headhaul charges have been cut from USD 160 to USD 120 per TEU, while backhaul and shortsea charges have been reduced from USD 80 to USD 60 per TEU, with similar adjustments for refrigerated containers.<\/p>\n<p>The move follows some stabilisation in bunker fuel prices after the disruption linked to the Strait of Hormuz. Very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) prices, which had surged to between USD 950 and USD 1,050 per tonne, have eased to a range of USD 900\u2013950 per tonne. However, the situation remains uncertain, as longer-term supply constraints could re-emerge if the crisis persists.<\/p>\n<p>Shipping operations continue to be shaped by ongoing disruptions. The crisis in the Red Sea and tensions around Hormuz are influencing routing decisions, transit times and costs across global trade lanes.<\/p>\n<p>At the regulatory level, discussions at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are adding another layer of uncertainty. The Marine Environment Protection Committee is reviewing the proposed Net Zero Framework, which includes a levy mechanism aimed at reducing emissions from international shipping.<\/p>\n<p>The position of the United States remains a key factor. The chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission has joined the discussions, reiterating opposition to the framework. The Commission has described the proposal as an unnecessary cost burden and warned of potential impacts on competition and inflation.
