Softwood lumber production in Eastern Canada is being reduced again, with Interfor curtailing two sawmills in Ontario.<\/p>\n
The company said operations at Nairn Centre and Gogama will be indefinitely curtailed. No restart timeline was given. At Nairn, the sawmill is expected to run into early to mid-June to process existing log inventories, with the planer continuing into late June.<\/p>\n
The decision follows earlier downtime in 2025. Interfor reduced production by about 145 million board feet between September and December across its Canadian and U.S. operations.<\/p>\n
Gogama had already been shut for two weeks last fall, followed by layoffs after additional tariffs were introduced. The Ear Falls sawmill was also indefinitely curtailed in 2025, affecting about 150 employees.<\/p>\n
The Ontario mills were acquired in 2022 as part of Interfor\u2019s $490 million purchase of EACOM Timber Corp., which included multiple sawmills in the region.<\/p>\n
Market conditions remain weak. The company cited soft lumber demand, U.S. duties and other trade measures, as well as ongoing cost pressures.<\/p>\n
In Ontario, operating costs remain relatively high, while distance to key markets adds to transport costs. Combined with duties on exports to the U.S., this continues to limit margins.<\/p>\n
Reduced sawmill activity lowers log demand in the region. The impact will depend on how long curtailments remain in place.<\/p>\n
