Weyerhaeuser is expanding the use of artificial intelligence across its forestry, logistics and mill operations, targeting efficiency gains that could increase annual profits by $1 billion by 2030 without relying on higher lumber prices.<\/p>\n
The company manages timberlands in the U.S. and Canada covering an area roughly the size of Indiana. It is building a digital model of these forests using satellite imagery, drone photography and lidar sensors, allowing it to map the size, species and spacing of individual trees.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been growing forests for 125 years. We probably have as much information and data about how forests grow as any organization on the planet,\u201d said Chief Executive Devin Stockfish. \u201cThe opportunity is to take that data and make better decisions across everything we do.\u201d<\/p>\n
The digital model is being used to improve planning and monitoring. AI systems analyse drone footage to calculate seedling survival rates, replacing manual field checks in difficult terrain. The company plants more than 100 million seedlings each year, equivalent to about 190 per minute, making small efficiency gains significant at scale.<\/p>\n
In parallel, Weyerhaeuser is testing semiautonomous logging equipment. Trials include skidders equipped with AI-assisted navigation and terrain mapping, capable of operating remotely. In one test, a machine was controlled from about 400 miles away, handling timber extraction at a southern U.S. site.<\/p>\n
The company is working toward systems where one operator could manage multiple machines. Further development is expected to extend automation across more stages of the harvesting process, including cutting, stacking and processing.<\/p>\n
AI is also being applied to silviculture decisions. The company is developing tools that can guide thinning operations by identifying which trees to remove and which to retain in order to maximise long-term value, including higher-grade lumber and utility poles.<\/p>\n
In industrial operations, Weyerhaeuser is using AI to monitor mill equipment for vibration patterns and other indicators of maintenance needs. Production is being adjusted in real time to match demand and pricing conditions, while logistics systems optimise transport routes.<\/p>\n
Around 5,000 trucks operate daily across the company\u2019s private road network, which spans distances comparable to the U.S. Interstate Highway System.<\/p>\n
To support its AI rollout, Weyerhaeuser has recruited technology specialists, including a senior executive from Amazon\u2019s Alexa division, to lead implementation.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s shares remain about 40% below their 2022 peak during the pandemic lumber boom, while broader equity markets have risen on investor interest in AI. Management said the targeted profit increase would come from operational improvements rather than changes in lumber prices.<\/p>\n
