Expectations are enormous, reaching into the billions in revenue by 2040, with sales volumes in the millions per year. Humanoid robots are thus becoming everyday objects, giving rise to a new industry comparable to the automotive sector. Advances in sensor and actuator technology, energy systems, and especially the use of physical artificial intelligence ("Physical AI") enable humanoid robots to take on a wide range of new tasks without requiring any redesign of their work environments. As robotics platforms, they combine mobility and intelligence and have the potential to become "universal machines"—these are key findings of the new Mechanical Engineering Industry Association (VDMA) Future Business study "Humanoid Robotics 2040."

Europe's opportunities in a huge growth market

Europe is not without opportunities in this enormous growth market and its key strategic position. European industry is entering this new market from a position of strength in some areas: it covers the entire value chain – from key components and robotic systems to integration and applications. Strong research networks, standardization, and industrial know-how form a solid foundation for the further development of humanoid robots. "This broad positioning is an advantage because humanoid systems can only scale successfully through the interplay of hardware, software, data, certification, and service," explains Hartmut Rauen, Deputy Managing Director of the VDMA (German Engineering Federation). "With humanoid robots, mechanical engineering is entering a new world. People will have humanoids at their side in many areas of life, because these are self-learning, agile units that truly understand the world."

At the same time, global dynamics are accelerating: Extensive investments in humanoid robotics and physical AI will shape platforms, ecosystems, and standards in the future. In many markets, the rules of the game are currently being established – from interfaces and safety certifications to data and operating models. “Without faster implementation, more pilot projects, and more private capital, Europe risks losing ground in a field crucial for competitiveness and becoming dependent on platforms and key technologies,” warns Dr. Eric Maiser, Head of the VDMA Competence Center Future Business.

“Humanoid robots represent a great opportunity, especially for industrial production processes, because they are modeled on the form and abilities of humans and can therefore be used in all environments designed for humans,” explains Patrick Schwarzkopf, Managing Director of VDMA Robotics + Automation. For industry, logistics, and the service sector, this also means that humanoids could take over tasks that are currently difficult to automate – for example, because they can handle changing objects, unstructured environments, or work closely with humans. At the same time, this creates new requirements for functional safety, cybersecurity, data protection, and testing and certification processes throughout the robot's entire lifecycle.

Future scenarios: Scenarios and insights

The VDMA future study, developed in cooperation with Z_Punkt GmbH and experts from industry, research, and application, describes four future scenarios for the year 2040 – from mass-market technology in everyday life to a "humanoid winter." These scenarios illustrate different paths for introduction, governance, and market structure, and make the opportunities and risks for European mechanical engineering tangible.

Scenario 1: Trustworthy helpers – robots in everyday life
Scenario 2: Premium Island – Robots for the Wealthy
Scenario 3: B2B Bot – Certified employees for commercial services
Scenario 4: Stuck in a niche – Humanoid winter

Several overarching insights can be derived from these four scenarios:

-Physical AI is changing automation far beyond humanoid robots.
-Substantial investment and intelligent regulation are needed for Europe to actively shape markets.
Trust and security are a key success factor – both technologically and regulatory.
-Ecosystems determine value creation: hardware and data platforms, standards, operation and service decide on future markets – both an opportunity and a risk for Europe.
-Short-term opportunities and risks, from technological breakthroughs to a lack of acceptance, can quickly change the market – speed becomes a competitive factor.

Market entry despite uncertainty

The study advises companies to treat humanoid robotics and physical AI as a strategic priority – even if the market ramp-up is still uncertain in some areas. “Opportunities lie along the entire value chain: from key components (drives, transmissions, sensors, power supply, safety and testing technology) to entering the manufacturing sector and developing production technologies for humanoid systems, all the way to deploying humanoids in their own factories to increase productivity and flexibility. To achieve this, however, companies must align their engineering processes with faster iterations, data-driven development, and software integration,” emphasizes Eric Maiser. “Furthermore, while physical AI is primarily being developed in the field of humanoid robotics, it is simultaneously becoming a driver of innovation across the entire mechanical engineering and automation sector,” adds Patrick Schwarzkopf.

VDMA demands clear and practice-oriented rules

The VDMA now expects policymakers to establish clear and practical rules for liability, incident reporting, and data logging. Approval processes must be predictable and efficient – especially for pilot projects and field tests. Furthermore, given the enormous investments, particularly in China and the USA, more private capital must be mobilized for the development of humanoid robots if Europe is not to fall behind. Public funding can lower barriers and accelerate the transfer of research to industry – it can incentivize private capital, but it cannot replace it. Cooperation between mechanical engineering companies, startups, software experts, and research institutions is another crucial element. "The story is not yet written – but the window of opportunity for shaping platforms, standards, operating models, and value creation is narrow," says Maiser.

“Other regions are investing on a large scale and shortening their learning curves. In the future, Europe should not only be a leading market, but above all a leading supplier – this can only be achieved with high speed and bold action. Through coordinated cooperation, the development of supply chains and ecosystems, intelligent regulation, real-world testing environments, scalable services, and significantly more private investment. Otherwise, Europe would be forced to adopt what others develop. In our visions of the future, there is no future without humanoids. All stakeholders should join forces to ensure that Europe plays a leading role in their production, operation, and application,” Schwarzkopf summarizes. “The VDMA will address the development of a functioning humanoid robotics ecosystem and call on policymakers and scientists to embark on this journey together,” adds Hartmut Rauen.

[5204

post-98498","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
