Shares of Mercer International Inc.<\/span><\/span> have slipped to multi-year lows, a quiet reflection of the strain that continues to define the global pulp and wood products sector.<\/p>\n

At around $1.07, the stock tells a story that has unfolded slowly, losing more than 80% of its value over the past decade. There is no single moment to explain the decline\u2014only a steady build-up of pressures: subdued pulp markets, rising costs and a demand recovery that remains uncertain.<\/p>\n

Mercer remains one of the world\u2019s largest producers of market pulp, with activities spanning pulp, lumber and a growing range of bio-based products. Its footprint in Europe is particularly concentrated in Germany, where it operates large-scale pulp mills in Stendal and Rosenthal, alongside sawmilling and wood-processing facilities in Friesau and Torgau. These sites form a central part of its global network, supplying both European and export markets with softwood pulp, lumber and energy generated from biomass.<\/p>\n

In Europe, Mercer holds a distinctive position as the only producer of northern bleached softwood kraft pulp in Germany, a key importing market, while its integrated model\u2014combining pulp production, lumber and bioenergy\u2014allows it to extract value from wood fibre across multiple streams. At the same time, these operations remain exposed to the same pressures affecting the wider sector, particularly input costs and market volatility.<\/p>\n

Pulp prices stay low, while fibre and energy costs continue to press on margins with little sign of relief. At times, the market suggests a degree of stabilisation, but these signals remain fragile.<\/p>\n
