Particularly worrying is the fact that expectations for the coming six months have worsened dramatically, plummeting into negative territory \u2013 from -14.1 to -30.2 points. The assessment of the current situation also deteriorated noticeably to -34.9 points (previous month: -27.5 points). Compared to the manufacturing sector as a whole, the timber industry is performing considerably worse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Burdensomely high energy and raw material prices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Across all segments, rising energy costs and increasing inflation are putting a strain on the timber industry. The forestry sector's cautious logging policies are also putting significant pressure on raw timber processors, leading to higher raw material costs. The furniture industry continues to suffer from declining construction completion figures and weak consumer confidence in Germany. Since the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War, rising energy and raw material costs, along with fears of supply chain disruptions, have added further negative factors. The supply situation for wood adhesives is particularly problematic: these are often based on urea, a product of the petrochemical industry. The geopolitical turmoil resulting from the Iran conflict has thus also driven up the prices of wood adhesives and led to supply chain problems in several sectors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwoodmarketsinfo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/hdh3.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Demand in housing construction offers a glimmer of hope<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The improved mood in the timber construction sector and related industries is due to rising demand in residential construction. The number of permits issued for single-family and two-family homes rose sharply by 14.3 percent in January 2026, while the number of permits issued for multi-family homes even increased by 18.1 percent. This development offers cautious optimism for the timber construction-related segment of the industry. However, it is not enough to offset the overall economic downturn.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the assessment of the current business situation in the timber industry deteriorated significantly compared to the previous month. Business expectations for the next six months also declined sharply and are considerably more negative than in February.
