Shipments of Austrian spruce lumber to Qatar have been disrupted following the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

Spruce lumber, used in the Gulf for concrete formwork and basic construction framing, was typically shipped from Austria to Dubai\u2019s Jebel Ali port, transferred to feeder vessels and delivered to Qatar\u2019s Hamad Port within about 45 days.<\/p>\n

Cargo must now be offloaded, transported overland and reloaded onto new vessels, adding thousands of dollars in costs per container and extending delivery times by months.<\/p>\n

The disruption affects a wide range of goods, including construction materials such as spruce beams and plywood, according to a Reuters report.<\/p>\n

A building materials supplier in Qatar, cited by Reuters and speaking on condition of anonymity, said that when U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran began on February 28, he had 17 containers of Austrian spruce in transit.<\/p>\n

Each container holds around 2,850 beams, valued at about 15,000 euros.<\/p>\n

The cargo departed from the Croatian port of Rijeka but was diverted to Khor Fakkan on the UAE\u2019s east coast instead of Jebel Ali, avoiding passage through the Strait of Hormuz. It was then trucked to Abu Dhabi and reloaded onto feeder vessels bound for Doha.<\/p>\n

The rerouting added a surcharge of about $3,600 per container, with some quotes reaching $5,000, more than triple the usual cost of shipping a 40-foot container from Europe to Qatar.<\/p>\n

Despite the rerouting, the cargo has not yet arrived and is expected to take an additional one to two months.<\/p>\n

At the same time, several containers of plywood shipped via Jebel Ali remained at sea for weeks before being returned to port, underscoring how importers can lose control over shipments once cargo is in transit.<\/p>\n

Before the disruption, standard 2x4 spruce beams were sold for around 23\u201325 Qatari riyals ($6.30\u2013$6.90) per piece. Prices have since increased to 35\u201337 riyals ($9.60\u2013$10.20).<\/p>\n

Future shipments could be more expensive. Routing timber via Saudi Arabia\u2019s Red Sea port of Jeddah is under consideration, which would involve higher shipping costs and a 1,500-kilometre overland journey to Qatar.<\/p>\n

Other supply chains have also been disrupted, highlighting the broader impact on regional logistics.<\/p>\n

Dubai and the United Arab Emirates have access to ports such as Fujairah and Khor Fakkan outside the Gulf, while countries including Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait rely more heavily on Gulf shipping routes.<\/p>\n

Governments in the region have introduced measures to ease disruptions. Saudi Arabia has allowed empty refrigerated trucks from neighbouring countries to enter and set up shared storage and redistribution zones at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. The UAE has established a \u201cgreen corridor\u201d with Oman to facilitate cargo movement via Omani ports.<\/p>\n

However, transport flows into Dubai and onward to other Gulf countries are expected to remain slower and more costly.<\/p>\n

Prices for goods in parts of the region have risen by 5% to 10% since late February, with further increases possible if disruptions continue.<\/p>\n

Shipments that previously took around 45 days from Europe to Qatar had taken about one month before Red Sea disruptions began in 2023. Many shipping lines continue to route vessels via the Cape of Good Hope.<\/p>\n
