As the softwood trade entered the second quarter, economic conditions in the UK remained uncertain, leaving traders without a clear direction and forcing a short-term approach to sales.<\/p>\n
With no consistent demand pattern, activity has been driven largely by day-to-day opportunities rather than forward planning. Volumes continue to fluctuate, and visibility remains limited across key end-use sectors, particularly construction.<\/p>\n
Demand has been unreliable and uneven, prompting UK stockists to keep inventories under tight control. Many merchants are relying on landed stocks to maintain specifications, working on short replenishment cycles instead of building forward positions. The focus has shifted towards preserving cash and limiting exposure in a market where price direction remains unclear.<\/p>\n
External pressures have intensified. The escalation of conflict in the Middle East has pushed up global fuel costs, feeding directly into freight rates. Within the first week of April, shipping companies operating out of Nordic and Baltic ports began applying bunker adjustment factor (BAF) surcharges to cover higher vessel refuelling costs. These increases have ranged between 7% and 10%, depending on route and port of loading.<\/p>\n
With the situation in the Strait of Hormuz still unstable and discussions emerging around potential safe passage charges, shipping lines expect further increases. As one market participant noted, price rises tend to be implemented quickly, while any reductions take longer to materialise.<\/p>\n
Despite these cost pressures, the UK softwood market remains highly competitive due to weak demand. Structural grades, particularly C24, continue to face strong downward pressure, with some distributors selling below replacement cost in an effort to generate turnover. This has created a widening gap between selling prices and the underlying cost base.<\/p>\n
At the same time, raw material costs are rising. Production curtailments across Scandinavia over the past year have started to tighten log supply, and sawmills are under pressure to return to profitability. As distribution costs increase, decisions to liquidate stock at current price levels appear increasingly difficult to justify.<\/p>\n
Currency movements have added further pressure. Since September last year, sterling has weakened against the Swedish krona, reducing returns for Nordic exporters selling into the UK market. Revenues earned in pounds translate into lower values in local currencies, limiting room for price adjustments.<\/p>\n
Domestic costs are also increasing. UK timber merchants are facing higher operating expenses, particularly from rising diesel prices affecting road transport. At the same time, higher employers\u2019 national insurance contributions introduced in last year\u2019s budget continue to weigh on labour costs.
