European softwood lumber markets moved through February without a clear trend, with delivered prices across most destinations holding within narrow ranges. Beneath that stability, however, the market remained under pressure from weak construction demand and rising costs.<\/p>\n

Across core markets, price movements were limited but varied by dimension and destination. In Germany, spruce 44\u201350\u00d7150 mm eased slightly to \u20ac315\u2013330\/m\u00b3, while smaller dimensions such as 50\u00d7100 mm edged up to \u20ac310\u2013320\/m\u00b3. In France, similar grades were quoted at \u20ac295\u2013330\/m\u00b3, with modest firming at the lower end but no broad shift in direction.<\/p>\n

Benelux markets remained steady, with standard spruce grades at \u20ac305\u2013320\/m\u00b3. Processed material continued to command a premium, with planed construction timber trading at \u20ac360\u2013380\/m\u00b3. In the Netherlands, availability of certain sizes and longer lengths was reported tighter, though without a corresponding price increase.<\/p>\n

Further south, Italy and Spain showed comparable levels for imported Nordic material. Spruce construction grades were generally offered in a range of \u20ac300\u2013330\/m\u00b3 delivered, depending on specifications and volumes, with buyers remaining cautious and price-sensitive.<\/p>\n

In central and eastern Europe, price levels were slightly lower. Poland and the Czech Republic saw C24 material changing hands closer to \u20ac270\u2013300\/m\u00b3, reflecting both local supply conditions and weaker domestic demand.<\/p>\n

Scandinavian exporters continued to offer into western Europe at around \u20ac300\u2013330\/m\u00b3 for standard construction grades, depending on delivery terms and certification requirements. Spruce maintained a premium over pine across most markets, with pine typically discounted by \u20ac10\u201320\/m\u00b3, though substitution remained limited.<\/p>\n

By March, the underlying softness became more visible. While headline price ranges remained broadly unchanged, transactions increasingly took place at the lower end. In several markets, particularly Germany and Poland, deals were reported below \u20ac280\/m\u00b3 for standard grades as distributors prioritised cash flow and reduced stock positions.<\/p>\n

Demand conditions remained uneven across the region. Construction activity continued to weigh on consumption, particularly in Germany and France, where residential building remained subdued. Buyers limited purchases to short-term requirements, reinforcing the absence of forward price momentum.<\/p>\n

At the same time, cost pressures intensified. The escalation of conflict in the Middle East disrupted global shipping routes and pushed up freight costs. War-related surcharges on shipments to the Middle East and North Africa rose sharply, adding more than \u20ac50\/m\u00b3 to shipping costs on some routes and reducing the viability of these markets for European exporters.<\/p>\n

This shock came on top of already elevated production costs. Sawmills in Scandinavia continued to face high sawlog prices, with raw material costs remaining out of line with finished lumber prices. Although some easing in log procurement has been noted, margins remain under pressure.<\/p>\n

Production curtailments across Nordic mills have begun to limit supply, particularly for certain dimensions and lengths. However, the reduction has not yet been sufficient to shift the pricing environment, with weak demand continuing to dominate.<\/p>\n

Certification requirements have also become more prominent, particularly in Benelux and parts of western Europe, where FSC-certified material is increasingly specified for larger projects.<\/p>\n
