The approach mirrors a broader shift in the European sawmilling sector towards upgrading existing facilities rather than building new mills, allowing production to continue while capacity is expanded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"659\" data-end=\"886\">The timing is deliberate. Global lumber consumption has fallen by more than 15 per cent from its peak during the coronavirus years to below 300 million cubic metres, weighing on prices and utilisation rates across the industry.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"1137\">Keitele is using the current slowdown to prepare for the next upturn. The company expects to increase output at the Keitele sawmill by around 50 per cent, contributing to a group-level target of roughly 1.2 million cubic metres of annual production.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1139\" data-end=\"1458\">Market conditions have become markedly more volatile in recent years. What was once a relatively stable cycle has given way to rapid fluctuations in prices, demand and logistics. Adjustments that previously unfolded over several years now take place within months, placing pressure on producers to respond more quickly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1460\" data-end=\"1839\">According to the company\u2019s own assessment, expectations of future growth remain despite the current downturn. In its latest stakeholder communication, Keitele points to continued demand across the value chain, with forest owners seeking higher wood prices, contractors and transport operators looking for increased activity, and sawmills aiming for improved capacity utilisation.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1841\" data-end=\"2165\">The company also highlights the importance of higher value-added production, arguing that the entire value chain must generate more output from existing resources. Lumber remains a significant export product for Finland, with export values reaching nearly \u20ac2.3bn in 2025 and a high share of value retained domestically.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2167\" data-end=\"2438\">Keitele maintains that the present investment cycle is well timed.
