A growing mismatch between raw material supply and construction demand is emerging in Sweden\u2019s lumber market, as an increasing volume of pine comes to market while building activity remains subdued.<\/p>\n
According to industry data cited by Swedish construction media, sawmills are facing a surplus of pine at a time when overall demand for wood products remains weak. The slowdown in construction\u2014visible not only in Sweden but across Europe and the US\u2014has weighed on production and reduced the sector\u2019s ability to absorb available volumes.<\/p>\n
New figures from Skogsindustrierna<\/span><\/span> underline the scale of the shift. Deliveries of wood raw materials have fallen to their lowest level in 25 years over the past two years, while the composition of supply has changed markedly. Pine availability is increasing, while spruce\u2014traditionally the dominant construction material in northern Europe\u2014is becoming less abundant.<\/p>\n The reasons are both structural and short term. Large volumes of spruce were harvested in the years following widespread bark beetle infestations from 2018 onwards. More recently, harvesting patterns have shifted towards pine. Weather conditions have reinforced the trend: unusually warm and wet conditions late last year limited access to spruce-rich areas, while storm damage in central Sweden brought additional volumes of timber to market, much of it pine.<\/p>\n The result is a supply shift that the construction sector has yet to fully absorb.<\/p>\n \u201cThe prolonged downturn in construction is clearly visible in wood product output,\u201d said Christian Nielsen, market analyst for wood products at Skogsindustrierna, noting that production fell by 14 per cent in the first two months of 2026 compared with a year earlier.<\/p>\n Demand remains generally weak, although tighter availability of spruce has supported relative pricing. For producers, however, the more pressing issue is how to place increasing volumes of pine in a market still oriented towards spruce.<\/p>\n That is beginning to change. Swedish sawmills have introduced new ranges of construction-grade pine products, arguing that the material can be used in most structural applications, with some limitations in highly exposed environments. Industry bodies say wider adoption will require greater flexibility from builders, who have long relied on established material preferences.<\/p>\n The shift in raw material balance is unlikely to reverse quickly. Beyond recent weather effects, longer-term trends are also at play.
