Sawlog prices in the Czech market are reaching around <strong data-start=\"622\" data-end=\"637\">\u20ac120\u2013140\/m\u00b3<\/strong>, compared with roughly <strong data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"675\">\u20ac90\u2013110\/m\u00b3<\/strong> in parts of Germany, creating a widening gap that is difficult for local processors to absorb.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"772\" data-end=\"1014\">Despite the country remaining a significant exporter of logs, domestic supply has tightened. Sawmills report that a large share of available volumes continues to be directed to export markets, where buyers are often able to pay higher prices.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1185\">\u201cThe paradox is that logs are leaving the country, while processors here are struggling to secure sufficient volumes at workable price levels,\u201d one industry source said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1373\">As a result, Czech sawmills have started to increase purchases from abroad. Imports from neighbouring countries have picked up, but companies are also testing more distant supply chains.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1375\" data-end=\"1673\">The Czech unit of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Stora Enso<\/span><\/span> is among those exploring deliveries from Scandinavia, including trial shipments of logs from Sweden and Finland. Such flows are atypical for the region due to transport costs, but current price differences are making them increasingly viable.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1675\" data-end=\"1898\">Freight costs remain a key factor, but sources say the overall economics can still work when compared with elevated domestic prices. \u201cEven with transport, imported wood can be competitive,\u201d another market participant noted.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"2207\">The situation reflects a larger imbalance in the Czech timber market. While the country exports substantial volumes of raw logs, domestic processing capacity is facing tighter supply conditions. This is putting pressure on margins, particularly for sawmills that rely on stable and predictable input costs.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2209\" data-end=\"2470\">Spruce, the dominant species for construction lumber, has been particularly affected. Strong demand combined with limited domestic availability has pushed prices higher, leaving Czech sawmills at a disadvantage compared with competitors in neighbouring markets.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2472\" data-end=\"2763\">The issue has also attracted political attention, as rising wood prices feed into construction costs and broader economic concerns. Discussions around forestry management and the structure of log sales have intensified, with calls to prioritise domestic processing over raw material exports.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2931\">For now, the trend is expected to continue.
