Mexican forestry company Proteak Uno<\/span><\/span> and its subsidiary Pro MDF<\/span><\/span> have been declared in bankruptcy by a district court in Mexico City, marking the final phase of insolvency proceedings initiated in 2024.<\/p>\n

The ruling follows the failure to reach a restructuring agreement with creditors during the conciliation phase of Mexico\u2019s insolvency process. Under local law, bankruptcy proceedings begin when no settlement can be agreed, shifting control of the company\u2019s assets and operations.<\/p>\n

A trustee is expected to be appointed within five working days to oversee the process. The trustee will be responsible for evaluating options to maximise the value of the companies, including the possibility of restructuring even at this stage, in line with applicable legislation.<\/p>\n

The company said the bankruptcy declaration does not automatically imply liquidation, noting that the process still allows for alternative outcomes depending on the trustee\u2019s assessment.<\/p>\n

Proteak, the only forestry company listed on Mexico\u2019s stock exchange, is among the world\u2019s largest producers of teak wood. However, the company has faced sustained financial pressure in recent years.<\/p>\n

In its 2023 financial report, Proteak acknowledged a risk of default despite renegotiating parts of its debt and maintaining ongoing discussions with creditors. External auditor Ernst & Young<\/span><\/span> also raised concerns about the company\u2019s ability to continue as a going concern, citing operating and net losses as well as repeated extensions on debt obligations.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the process, creditors were presented with a restructuring proposal, with a deadline set in February 2026. The lack of agreement effectively closed the main path toward a negotiated recovery within the insolvency framework.<\/p>\n

The bankruptcy declaration formalises a shift from attempted restructuring to court-supervised asset management, with the focus now on preserving value for creditors.<\/p>\n

Proteak said it will continue to inform investors and stakeholders of any material developments as the process advances.<\/p>\n

The company operates extensive teak plantations in Mexico and manages industrial processing through its MDF division. Its subsidiary operates one of the country\u2019s largest MDF production facilities, supplying both domestic and export markets.
