Wood markets have been highly volatile in recent months, shaped by ongoing trade uncertainty and a weakening housing sector. Lumber futures have dropped 24% since reaching a three-year peak in early August, closing Monday at $526.50 per thousand board feet.

The decline could have been steeper, but two of North America’s largest producers recently announced output reductions, helping to slow the downward momentum.

Historically, sharp moves in lumber prices have served as a leading indicator for both housing activity and broader economic trends. During the Covid-19 lockdown period, prices for two-by-fours surged to nearly three times pre-pandemic levels—an early sign of inflationary pressures and disrupted supply chains. Later, when the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates in 2022 to contain inflation, lumber was among the first assets to retreat. The latest downturn is once again pointing toward caution.

Earlier this year, a surplus of lumber built up across the U.S. as buyers anticipated higher duties on Canadian imports, alongside additional tariffs threatened by Donald Trump.

Prices followed a turbulent path. They climbed in the spring after the White House launched a national security investigation into imported lumber and floated steep tariffs on Canadian goods. They then dropped when those threats eased, before rising again in May as buyers rushed to secure supply ahead of expected duty increases and potential tariffs.

According to Stinson Dean, co-founder of Revol Building Solutions and a former lumber trader, purchasing decisions were driven more by tariff expectations than by actual demand.

Faced with uncertainty, Dean chose not to build inventory, instead maintaining minimal stock levels for his prefabrication business.

“I was going to lose money because tariffs happen, or I was going to lose money because there were no tariffs,” he said. “It was 50/50 either way. So, I sat on my hands.”

Spot prices have also declined. The Framing Lumber Composite Index compiled by Random Lengths has fallen roughly 12% since Aug. 1.

Producers are now adjusting output in response.

Interfor, the third-largest lumber producer in North America, announced it will cut production by 12%. The reductions will span operations in the U.S. South, Pacific Northwest, British Columbia and eastern Canada. Measures include reduced hours, shift adjustments, extended maintenance shutdowns and longer holiday breaks, amounting to a reduction of about 145 million board feet by year-end.

Domtar is also scaling back. The company is taking downtime at its Glenwood, Arkansas sawmill, indefinitely idling another facility in Maniwaki, Quebec, and eliminating a shift at its Côte-Nord operation.

Further production cuts may be necessary to rebalance supply. However, that adjustment could come naturally, as higher duties have increased the break-even thresholds for Canadian producers while demand continues to soften.

“We anticipate further closures or curtailments,” said Michael Roxland, analyst at Truist Securities.

Falling lumber prices are increasingly drawing attention on Wall Street as a potential signal of weakness spreading toward Main Street.
