Brazilian forest industry company BrasPine plans to invest around $250 million in a new pine processing facility in northern Uruguay, marking its first industrial operation outside Brazil and reinforcing a broader regional expansion strategy.<\/p>\n
The project, located in the department of Rivera near the Brazilian border, has been approved under Uruguay\u2019s investment promotion regime. The total planned investment\u2014structured in phases\u2014will cover machinery, equipment and infrastructure, with initial spending expected to be lower before a gradual scale-up.<\/p>\n
The plant, scheduled to begin operations in 2027, will be BrasPine\u2019s third industrial unit and is expected to generate around 400 direct jobs, alongside additional employment across the forestry supply chain.<\/p>\n
The facility will process pine logs and is primarily geared towards export markets, in line with the company\u2019s existing business model. Once fully operational, the sawmill is expected to reach a capacity of around 35,000 cubic metres of lumber per month, positioning it among the larger mechanical wood processing units in South America.<\/p>\n
BrasPine said the choice of Rivera was driven by proximity to forest resources, existing infrastructure and its location on the Uruguay\u2013Brazil border, which supports logistics and integration with its current operations.<\/p>\n
The investment adds to a growing cluster of sawmill capacity in northern Uruguay, as the country continues to attract foreign capital into mechanical wood processing alongside its established pulp sector. Earlier, Kluntex Lumber inaugurated a smaller-scale pine processing operation in the same region, with capacity of around 7,000 cubic metres per month.<\/p>\n
Uruguay has positioned itself as a stable investment destination for the forest industry, supported by long-standing forestry policy and a high share of certified forest resources.
