Capacity growth in Latin America\u2019s paper, packaging and forest products sector is reshaping the industry\u2019s competitive structure, widening the gap in credit quality with European producers, according to a Moody\u2019s analysis.<\/p>\n
Producers such as Suzano S.A., Klabin S.A., CMPC and Arauco are adding capacity at a scale that is difficult to match elsewhere. The new mills, concentrated in Brazil and Chile, are built around export flows and designed to operate at the lower end of the global cost curve.<\/p>\n
Moody\u2019s points to a set of structural factors underpinning this position: fast-growing plantations, abundant raw material supply, and integrated operations that limit exposure to volatile input markets. Combined with modern assets, these advantages translate into consistently stronger margins and more predictable cash flow.<\/p>\n
For European producers, the picture is more constrained. Groups including Stora Enso, UPM or Mondi are operating with a structurally higher cost base, shaped by more expensive raw materials, elevated energy prices and tighter regulatory requirements. Much of the installed capacity is older, with limited scope for efficiency gains without significant capital spending.<\/p>\n
The result is a growing divergence in financial profiles. Latin American producers are better positioned to sustain margins through the cycle, while European peers are more exposed to price swings and cost inflation.<\/p>\n
That gap is prompting a strategic response. Some European companies are not only competing with Latin American producers but are increasingly investing alongside them. UPM has developed large-scale pulp capacity in Uruguay, while Stora Enso maintains joint operations in the region, effectively acknowledging the limits of the European cost base.<\/p>\n
At the same time, supply is expanding faster than demand across several product segments. Moody\u2019s flags a rising risk of oversupply, which is likely to weigh on prices. In that environment, cost position becomes decisive: low-cost Latin American producers can absorb weaker pricing, while higher-cost European assets come under increasing pressure.<\/p>\n
China remains central to the balance. As the main destination for Latin American exports, it continues to anchor global pricing. Any shift in Chinese demand would quickly feed through to international markets.<\/p>\n
Moody\u2019s assessment points to a sector that is no longer moving in parallel across regions.
