British Columbia\u2019s forestry sector is targeting Vietnam as an alternative market amid U.S. tariff pressure, but a report by Business in Vancouver suggests that demand for B.C. wood will ultimately be determined outside the country.<\/p>\n
Vietnam\u2019s position as the world\u2019s second-largest furniture exporter, with rising imports of timber and wood products, has made it an attractive destination for Canadian suppliers. The country\u2019s expanding manufacturing base is driving demand for raw materials, creating opportunities for exporters.<\/p>\n
However, the report highlights that Vietnam is not a new or open market. Supply chains are already well established, with manufacturers relying on domestic plantation wood and long-standing imports from the U.S., China and Europe.<\/p>\n
Canadian producers, supported by Forestry Innovation Investment, have begun introducing species such as western hemlock and Douglas fir through product trials with local manufacturers. While some trials have progressed to commercial orders, market penetration remains limited.<\/p>\n
According to the Business in Vancouver report, the main barrier is not supply or demand in Vietnam, but purchasing decisions made further along the value chain. Furniture produced in Vietnam is largely exported, and material selection is typically specified by buyers, retailers and designers in destination markets.<\/p>\n
This places the focus on markets such as Vancouver and other North American and European cities, where product specifications are set. Manufacturers in Vietnam tend to follow these requirements rather than choose materials independently.<\/p>\n
Cost and logistics also remain constraints. Importing Canadian wood involves higher transport costs, longer lead times and larger shipment volumes compared with local sourcing, while established materials such as oak continue to dominate due to familiarity and customer preference.<\/p>\n
At the same time, B.C. wood offers advantages in sustainability, legality and supply stability\u2014factors increasingly valued in export markets. These attributes may support its positioning, particularly for products aimed at Europe and North America.<\/p>\n
Vietnam functions primarily as a manufacturing hub rather than the key battleground for market share.
