Freight rates for log shipments from South Island ports to China have climbed from around US$30\u201333 per JAS m3 in February\u2013March to US$42\u201345 per JAS m3 for April, driven primarily by higher bunker fuel costs and increased risk premiums on shipping routes.<\/p>\n<p>The increase of roughly US$12 per m3 \u2013 equivalent to about NZ$20 per m3 \u2013 is feeding directly into reduced returns at the forest gate. At the same time, harvesting and transport contractors are seeking higher rates to offset rising diesel costs, compounding the pressure across the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>Logging is highly fuel-dependent, with around 12 litres of diesel required to produce one tonne of logs. Operators estimate that recent fuel increases have pushed total operating costs up by approximately 25%, a level widely seen as unsustainable if prolonged.<\/p>\n<p>Forest Management Group director Glenn Moir said the impact is already being felt unevenly across the sector, with higher-cost forests at particular risk. \u201cThe ones that are further away from the market and have steeper country are going to come under real pressure just to make it economic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Export-oriented regions such as South Canterbury and the west coast of the North Island are especially exposed, given their reliance on long-distance transport to port and international markets. Industry participants warn that if current conditions persist, some harvesting operations could be scaled back or temporarily halted.<\/p>\n<p>Estimates suggest that net returns to forest owners could fall by NZ$8\u201315 per JAS m3, a decline significant enough to trigger decisions to suspend harvesting in marginal areas. Any reduction in harvest volumes would also have knock-on effects for domestic processors, particularly sawmills, which could face tighter log supply.<\/p>\n<p>The cost pressures come on top of increasingly tough shipping conditions. Some vessel operators have reportedly taken a more cautious stance on routes linked to the Middle East, while others are demanding higher rates to compensate for fuel and uncertainty. The Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping chokepoint, has become a focal point in pricing discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Until early March, the outlook for the sector had been broadly positive. Export log prices were firm, domestic demand was improving, and 2026 had been expected to deliver solid returns. That outlook has since shifted abruptly.<\/p>\n<p>On the demand side, activity in China remains a key variable. Daily log consumption along the eastern seaboard has been running at around 50,000\u201355,000 m3, slightly below February levels. Wholesale lumber prices in China eased in early March, but market sentiment remains relatively stable, with attention focused on potential supply disruptions from New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>If higher costs lead to reduced harvesting volumes, supply into China could tighten, potentially supporting log prices in the near term. However, any gains on the sales side are likely to be offset by rising costs across harvesting, transport and shipping.<\/p>\n<p>India continues to show firm demand for New Zealand logs, supported in part by the bilateral free trade agreement concluded in late 2025.
