Logistics is the second-largest cost item after raw materials, meaning the impact on profitability is immediate and difficult to offset.

The increase is not marginal. Containerised lumber freight to some Middle Eastern destinations has in cases tripled, reflecting both higher bunker costs and risk surcharges linked to the conflict. At the same time, disruptions to established trade routes are extending the impact beyond the region itself.

Longer routes, wider disruption

Exports to Asia — another core outlet for Nordic sawmills — are also being affected. A growing share of vessels is avoiding the Suez Canal and rerouting around Africa, increasing both transit times and fuel consumption. This is embedding higher transport costs across global supply chains, not just for shipments directly linked to the Middle East.

For Finland, the stakes are significant. The Middle East and North Africa represent a key export destination, with shipments valued at close to €600m annually. Any disruption to that flow — whether through cost increases or reduced accessibility — has immediate consequences for volumes and pricing.

At the same time, the survey points to a deterioration in market behaviour. Customer decision-making has slowed, with deals being postponed as uncertainty rises. Higher inflation, interest rates and geopolitical risk are feeding through into construction demand, weakening the outlook for end-use markets.

Tino Aalto, chief executive of the Finnish Sawmilling Industry Association, described the situation as an extension of an already difficult period. The sector has been grappling with high raw material costs and weak international demand for several years, and the current crisis is prolonging that pressure while further darkening expectations for the year.

Sweden: cost pressures meet weak demand

In Sweden, the same forces are visible, layered onto a fragile market backdrop.

Production of wood products fell by 14% in the first two months of 2026 compared with a year earlier, reflecting subdued demand across Europe. The downturn that began in late 2025 has carried into the new year, with deliveries falling and companies focusing on cost reductions.

Christian Nielsen, market analyst for wood products at the Swedish Forest Industries, pointed to continued weakness in European construction as a central factor weighing on demand. While Germany has shown some resilience due to limited domestic raw material availability, the broader European market remains soft.

Against that backdrop, the Iran-linked disruption is adding a new cost layer. Rising transport costs are particularly challenging for Swedish producers, given the long distances to key export markets.

At the same time, Nielsen noted a relative advantage: Swedish production is largely self-sufficient in energy through bioenergy, making it less exposed to rising fossil fuel prices than some competitors. Even so, this does little to offset the surge in transport costs, which remain externally driven.

Industry response: rerouting, repricing, reallocating

The operational implications were discussed in a recent webinar featuring Olle Berg of Setra Group and Gregor Triltsch of Pfeifer Group.

Berg described the impact as both immediate and potentially long-lasting. Higher oil prices are translating quickly into increased shipping costs across all routes, with bunker fuel costs affecting transport regardless of destination.

At the same time, shipments into the Middle East are becoming increasingly difficult to justify. Container prices, fuel surcharges and risk premiums have risen to levels that, in some cases, make deliveries commercially unviable, particularly given the added uncertainty around whether goods will reach their destination.

“For Swedish sawmills, the volumes to the area are relatively small — but not insignificant,” Berg said. The reduction in flows means producers must identify alternative markets and adjust product mixes, especially for certain assortments such as thicker pine grades.

Triltsch highlighted the broader supply chain implications. Rising logistics costs are not isolated to exporters but are feeding through the entire value chain, affecting pricing structures, contract negotiations and inventory planning. The combined effect is a market that is becoming more complex and less predictable.

Competitive pressure and shifting trade flows

The disruption is also interacting with longer-term structural trends.

Competition in global markets has intensified, particularly in Europe, where producers from China and Brazil are increasing their presence. This is putting additional pressure on prices and margins for Nordic producers, even before accounting for rising transport costs.

At the same time, displaced volumes from disrupted markets risk being redirected into already competitive regions, further increasing supply pressure.

There are also potential second-order effects. Higher oil prices may raise the cost of competing materials such as plastics, which could support demand for paper and wood-based products in certain segments. However, these effects are likely to be gradual and uncertain, compared with the immediate impact of rising logistics costs.

Market outlook: costs up, recovery pushed further out

For Nordic sawmills, the immediate direction is clear: costs are rising faster than markets can absorb.

Freight is the most visible pressure point. Higher bunker prices and risk premiums have lifted transport costs across all routes, not just those directly exposed to the Middle East. With vessels rerouting around Africa and container availability tightening, logistics is becoming both more expensive and less predictable.

That feeds directly into margins. With logistics already the second-largest cost item, the increase is not something producers can easily pass on, particularly in a market where demand remains soft.

On the demand side, there is little to offset the pressure. As Christian Nielsen noted, European construction activity continues to weigh on consumption, and while pockets of demand exist — such as Germany — they are not sufficient to shift the overall balance. The slowdown in customer decision-making reported in Finland points to the same trend: caution is spreading through the value chain.

The adjustment now underway is practical rather than strategic. Volumes are being redirected, product mixes adjusted and contracts renegotiated where possible. As Olle Berg indicated, reduced flows into the Middle East require alternative outlets, particularly for specific grades, which adds pressure in other markets.

There are some mitigating factors. Sweden’s relative insulation from energy costs provides limited relief, and higher oil prices could, over time, improve the competitive position of wood against more energy-intensive materials. But these effects are secondary and slower to materialise.

The more immediate risk lies in duration. If elevated freight and fuel costs persist, they will continue to compress margins and delay any meaningful recovery in sawmill activity. With production already down and competition intensifying, the room for adjustment is narrowing.

[1

post-98326","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
