US lumber futures have climbed back above $600 per thousand board feet, reversing a two-month decline as supply tightens and construction activity shows signs of improvement.<\/p>\n
The rebound comes as sentiment in the housing market stabilises. The NAHB Housing Market Index rose to 38 in March, with slight gains in buyer traffic and expectations for future sales, even as financing conditions remain restrictive.<\/p>\n
Demand has been supported by a pickup in construction. Multifamily housing starts jumped by 29.1%, while overall residential construction activity increased by 7.2%. At the same time, builders continue to rely on incentives, with 37% still offering price reductions to attract buyers.<\/p>\n
On the supply side, the market is tightening. Mill closures and higher duties on Canadian lumber imports are expected to remove more than 1.3bn board feet from the market this year.<\/p>\n
Rising costs are adding further pressure. Higher energy prices linked to tensions in the Middle East are increasing transport and shipping expenses, feeding into the cost structure across the timber trade.<\/p>\n
The combination of constrained supply and modest improvement in construction activity is supporting prices, offsetting the impact of elevated mortgage rates.<\/p>\n
