Roundwood prices in Finland showed diverging trends in February, with sawlog prices in standing sales remaining close to the previous month\u2019s level, while pulpwood prices continued to fall. The decline in standing-sale pulpwood prices has now lasted for eight consecutive months, although the decrease in February was smaller than in the preceding months.<\/p>\n

In standing sales, spruce sawlogs were purchased for an average of \u20ac78.12\/m\u00b3 and pine sawlogs for \u20ac73.19\/m\u00b3, both close to January levels. Birch sawlogs also remained unchanged at \u20ac59.09\/m\u00b3. Pulpwood prices in standing sales ended up between \u20ac21 and \u20ac24\/m\u00b3, though prices continued to vary considerably by region and harvesting method.<\/p>\n

Since last June, standing-sale pulpwood prices have fallen continuously, with average prices down by at least \u20ac12\/m\u00b3 over eight months. In real terms, the price of pine pulpwood has fallen by 39%, spruce pulpwood by 34% and birch pulpwood by 37% during that period.<\/p>\n

In delivery sales, the price of pine pulpwood fell slightly, dropping below \u20ac41\/m\u00b3 to \u20ac40.50\/m\u00b3. For spruce and birch pulpwood, the decline came to a halt. Their average prices stood at \u20ac43.24\/m\u00b3 and \u20ac43.29\/m\u00b3 respectively, with birch posting a monthly increase.<\/p>\n

Roundwood trade volumes also fell sharply. In February, purchases of industrial roundwood from private forests were 21% lower than a year earlier and 16% below the average for the previous five years. For January-February, cumulative roundwood trade was 23% lower than a year ago and 13% below the five-year average. Compared with the previous five years, trade in sawlogs decreased by 6%, while pulpwood volumes fell by 19%.<\/p>\n
