The May 2026 lumber contract was quoted around $598 per thousand board feet, while prices for later delivery months moved higher along the forward curve. Contracts for July 2026 traded near $617.50, September 2026 around $638, and November 2026 close to $646.<\/p>\n
The upward slope continues into 2027. Futures for January 2027 were quoted at approximately $657.50, followed by $669 for March 2027 and about $680.50 for the May 2027 contract.<\/p>\n
The structure of the futures curve suggests that market participants expect firmer lumber prices over the medium term, even though spot and near-term contracts remain below the highs seen during earlier market cycles.<\/p>\n
Analysts generally interpret this type of forward curve as reflecting expectations of gradual demand recovery in construction markets, combined with tighter supply conditions in North American lumber production.<\/p>\n
Higher costs, capacity curtailments in parts of the industry and structural adjustments in sawmill operations have already reduced supply growth in recent years. At the same time, expectations for improved housing activity and infrastructure spending in North America are contributing to a more supportive medium-term outlook.<\/p>\n
Despite the stronger forward pricing, the near-term market remains sensitive to economic conditions, particularly interest rates and housing activity. Lumber demand is closely tied to residential construction, making the sector vulnerable to fluctuations in borrowing costs and consumer confidence.<\/p>\n
