Moody\u2019s Investors Service has revised its outlook for the global paper, packaging and forest products sector to stable from negative, reflecting stronger earnings supported by operational adjustments across the industry, although demand conditions remain subdued.<\/p>\n
According to the rating agency, companies in the forest products sector have strengthened their financial performance through cost reductions, restructuring programmes and the restart of previously idled production capacity. These measures have helped stabilise profitability after a weaker period for the industry.<\/p>\n
Moody\u2019s said the improved outlook reflects the sector\u2019s ability to adjust production and manage costs during the downturn, while improving market conditions in some segments have supported earnings. The agency noted that operational discipline and supply adjustments introduced by producers have contributed to stabilising performance across the sector.<\/p>\n
Among the companies referenced in the outlook are International Paper Company, Stora Enso Oyj, UPM-Kymmene Oyj, Suzano S.A. and Klabin S.A..<\/p>\n
However, Moody\u2019s cautioned that demand across the forest products value chain remains weak, reflecting slower economic growth and reduced industrial activity in several regions. Structural declines in graphic paper consumption continue to affect parts of the sector, while packaging demand has moderated after the strong expansion recorded earlier in the decade.<\/p>\n
Despite these pressures, Moody\u2019s expects the sector\u2019s credit metrics to remain broadly stable over the next 12 to 18 months, supported by continued cost management and operational discipline among major producers.<\/p>\n
The agency added that risks remain if global economic conditions deteriorate further or if demand for paper and packaging products weakens more sharply than expected.
