The conflict involving Iran is already disrupting shipping routes and energy markets, with immediate consequences for global trade and the forest products sector. Middle Eastern countries are important export destinations for the Finnish sawmilling industry, for example, and the escalating crisis is increasing transport costs and extending delivery times.<\/p>\n

Shipping traffic in the region has been disrupted as freight insurance premiums and war-risk surcharges rise and some carriers suspend operations. At the same time, the broader turmoil in energy markets has pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel for the first time since 2022, increasing fuel costs throughout global supply chains.<\/p>\n

For the lumber industry, the most immediate impact is being felt in logistics.<\/p>\n

Container freight rates surge<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lumber from Finland is largely shipped to international markets in containers, and freight costs have risen sharply as shipping companies introduce war-risk surcharges and adjust routes.<\/p>\n

\u201cLogistics is where the situation has the biggest immediate impact. A war surcharge has been added to container rates,\u201d said Matti Iso-Kuusela, sales director at Versowood.<\/p>\n

Versowood is Finland\u2019s largest privately owned sawmilling company. According to Iso-Kuusela, container freight rates for lumber shipments to certain destinations in the Middle East have doubled and in some cases even tripled.<\/p>\n

Such sudden increases cannot easily be reflected in product prices. As a result, shipments to some crisis-affected markets have effectively stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransport already represents a significant share of the product price,\u201d Iso-Kuusela said.<\/p>\n

Shipping disruptions are also affecting maritime routes more broadly. Some container lines have suspended services to specific destinations, while higher fuel prices are pushing transport costs upward worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisruptions to sea routes increase export costs for forest industry products and extend delivery times,\u201d said Timo Tolonen, head of international trade at the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.<\/p>\n

The Middle East remains a key market<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Middle East has long been an important outlet for Nordic lumber, particularly when construction demand in Europe weakens. Europe accounts for roughly one-third of global softwood supply, with Sweden, Finland, Germany and Austria among the region\u2019s leading exporters.<\/p>\n

Nordic lumber is shipped to markets across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, as well as China and Japan.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia is one of the most significant destinations for Finnish lumber exports among countries affected by the current crisis. By December last year, about 400,000 cubic metres of lumber had been exported from Finland to Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

The region\u2019s largest single market for Finnish sawmills is Egypt. Last year, about 1.4 million cubic metres of softwood lumber and planed products were shipped there, making it the top destination for Finnish lumber exports.<\/p>\n

If markets in the Middle East slow for a longer period because of the conflict, exporters would have to find buyers in other regions \u2014 a process that is far from simple.<\/p>\n

Shipping routes under pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n

European lumber shipments rely heavily on maritime routes through the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal and the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world\u2019s most important maritime chokepoints for energy transport, has become a focal point of the crisis.<\/p>\n

At the same time, attacks on vessels in the Red Sea have disrupted shipping through the Suez Canal. As a result, some freight traffic has already been diverted around the southern tip of Africa, significantly increasing travel distances, delivery times and fuel costs.<\/p>\n

Higher freight and insurance costs, combined with rising energy prices, could quickly erode the competitiveness of Nordic lumber exports while tightening margins for producers.<\/p>\n

Construction markets in the Middle East depend heavily on imported lumber and other wood products because the region has limited domestic forest resources. If the conflict escalates further, economic activity could slow, construction projects may be delayed and financing conditions could tighten, reducing demand for imported lumber.<\/p>\n

Possible shifts in global lumber trade<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Middle East has often served as an important destination for Nordic lumber shipments. If disruptions persist, producers may have to redirect volumes to Europe, North Africa or Asia, potentially creating temporary oversupply and price pressure in those markets.<\/p>\n

Global timber markets depend heavily on long-distance maritime trade, and trade flows can shift quickly in response to geopolitical developments. Over the past decade, lumber markets have already been affected by a series of disruptions, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war and related sanctions, the Red Sea shipping crisis that began in 2023, and trade restrictions.<\/p>\n

The current conflict may accelerate further changes in global timber trade flows and raises broader questions about the long-term stability of the Middle East as a major import market for lumber.<\/p>\n

At the same time, disruptions in maritime routes could also affect European exports to Asia.
