The United States has opened a new administrative review of trade duties on several imported wood products, placing Canadian lumber exporters and Chinese wood manufacturers under renewed scrutiny.<\/p>\n
The review, announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce on March 9, 2026, will examine imports made during the 2025 calendar year. Final results are expected by January 31, 2027.<\/p>\n
Three product categories are included in the investigation: Canadian softwood lumber, certain hardwood plywood from China and wooden bedroom furniture exported from China. All three products are already subject to antidumping measures under U.S. trade law.<\/p>\n
The review forms part of the routine process used by U.S. authorities to reassess duty levels and determine whether exporters have continued selling products in the American market at unfairly low prices.<\/p>\n
Canadian lumber duties under pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n The most politically sensitive part of the review concerns Canadian softwood lumber exports, a long-running trade dispute between the United States and Canada that has repeatedly disrupted the North American wood market.<\/p>\n Canadian exporters currently face a combined antidumping and countervailing duty rate of 35.19 percent, a sharp increase from roughly 14.4 percent applied in earlier reviews.<\/p>\n U.S. producers, represented by the U.S. Lumber Coalition, continue to support the tariffs. The group argues that provincial forestry policies in Canada allow producers to access timber at below-market prices, giving them an advantage in the U.S. housing market.<\/p>\n American industry representatives say the duties are necessary to protect domestic sawmills and employment from what they describe as unfair competition.<\/p>\n Canadian producers, meanwhile, have long disputed those claims, arguing that the tariffs raise construction costs in the United States and distort trade in one of the world\u2019s largest lumber markets.<\/p>\n Chinese wood products also reviewed<\/strong><\/p>\n The Commerce Department will also examine imports of hardwood plywood and wooden bedroom furniture from China, two product categories that have faced growing pressure in recent years.<\/p>\n The United States remains the largest destination for Chinese wood furniture exports, accounting for about 27 percent of total shipments. But export performance weakened during 2025 as demand slowed and prices declined.<\/p>\n According to industry data, shipments of Chinese wooden bedroom furniture fell 7.1 percent to 129.4 million pieces, while export value dropped 20 percent to roughly $5.6 billion.<\/p>\n The review will assess whether Chinese exporters continued selling these products in the United States at prices that violate existing trade rules.<\/p>\n Limited number of exporters examined<\/strong><\/p>\n U.S. officials said that only a limited number of exporters may be selected for detailed examination.
