At the same time, the long-running softwood lumber dispute between the United States and Canada continued to weigh on the industry. Duties imposed by Washington on Canadian lumber shipments — now above 14 percent in some cases and still under review — have complicated trade flows and encouraged several producers to expand manufacturing capacity inside the United States.

In response, many companies shut down older or less competitive sawmills while concentrating production in larger, modern facilities, particularly in the U.S. South where timber resources remain plentiful and log costs are relatively low.

West Fraser Timber was responsible for some of the most visible changes. The company permanently closed its sawmills in Augusta, Georgia, and 100 Mile House in British Columbia, and confirmed that previously curtailed operations in Huttig, Arkansas, and Lake Butler, Florida, would not restart. These steps were taken as the company shifted production toward its most efficient mills.

Other producers followed similar paths. Interfor closed its sawmill in Ear Falls, Ontario, and implemented production cuts at several facilities in Louisiana and British Columbia. Canfor also reduced capacity, including the closure of two sawmills in South Carolina as it focused investment on larger and more modern mills in its network.

Domtar, which acquired Resolute Forest Products, shut down lumber operations in Maniwaki, Quebec, and Glenwood, Arkansas as part of a restructuring of its wood-products operations.

Taken together, these decisions point to a clear change in the North American lumber industry. Production is increasingly concentrated in large sawmills located close to reliable timber supplies, particularly in the southern United States.

The tariff dispute between the United States and Canada has also played a role in shaping investment decisions. Canadian companies, long the dominant suppliers of softwood lumber to the U.S. housing market, have steadily increased their presence south of the border in order to avoid duties and secure direct access to American customers.

Even with these changes, North America remains home to the world’s largest lumber producers, and Canadian companies continue to dominate the list of the biggest sawmill groups operating across the continent.

Rank

Company

Estimated lumber capacity

1

West Fraser Timber

~8.0–9.0 million m³

2

Canfor

~6.5–7.5 million m³

3

Weyerhaeuser

~6.0–6.5 million m³

4

Interfor

~5.0–5.5 million m³

5

Georgia-Pacific

~4.5–5.0 million m³

6

Domtar (Resolute Forest Products)

~3.5–4.0 million m³

7

Sierra Pacific Industries

~3.0–3.5 million m³

8

Hampton Lumber

~2.5–3.0 million m³

9

Tolko Industries

~2.0–2.5 million m³

10

PotlatchDeltic

~1.5–2.0 million m³

West Fraser Timber

West Fraser Timber remains the largest sawmill group in North America and one of the largest lumber producers in the world.

The company operates an extensive network of sawmills across Canada and the United States, with an increasing share of capacity now located in the U.S. South. In recent years West Fraser has restructured its mill portfolio, closing older facilities while investing in modern high-capacity mills designed to improve efficiency and lower production costs.

The closures of the Augusta, Georgia, and 100 Mile House, British Columbia, sawmills were among the most notable developments of the past year. The company also confirmed that previously curtailed mills in Huttig, Arkansas, and Lake Butler, Florida, would remain permanently closed.

These moves reflect both market pressures and the company’s long-term strategy of concentrating production in its most competitive facilities.

Canfor

Canfor ranks among the largest lumber producers in North America with sawmills in both Canada and the United States.

The company has long been one of the largest exporters of Canadian softwood lumber to the United States and Asian markets. The continuing softwood lumber tariff dispute remains a central challenge for Canfor and other Canadian producers.

Duties imposed on Canadian lumber exports have reduced margins and encouraged companies to expand manufacturing operations within the United States. Canfor has gradually increased its presence in the U.S. South while closing less competitive facilities elsewhere, including two sawmills in South Carolina.

Weyerhaeuser

Weyerhaeuser remains one of the most influential companies in the North American timber sector.

In addition to operating sawmills across the United States, the company manages one of the largest private timberland portfolios in the world. This vertically integrated structure links forest ownership with lumber manufacturing and provides a secure supply of logs for its mills.

Weyerhaeuser’s sawmill operations remain closely tied to the U.S. housing market, which continues to be the primary driver of lumber demand in North America.

Interfor

Interfor has grown rapidly over the past decade through acquisitions and mill expansions, becoming one of the largest publicly traded lumber producers in the world.

The company operates sawmills across Canada and the United States, with a growing share of its production capacity located in the U.S. South. As part of a broader restructuring, Interfor closed its sawmill in Ear Falls, Ontario, and implemented production curtailments at several facilities in response to market conditions.

These decisions reflect both weak market prices and ongoing challenges related to timber supply in parts of Canada.

Georgia-Pacific

Georgia-Pacific, a subsidiary of Koch Industries, is one of the largest lumber producers in the United States.

The company operates numerous sawmills across the southern United States, producing southern yellow pine lumber used primarily in residential construction. Georgia-Pacific also maintains a large portfolio of wood panels, building products and paper materials.

Its sawmill operations benefit from the abundant timber resources of the U.S. South, a region that has become increasingly central to North American lumber production.

Domtar (Resolute Forest Products)

Following its acquisition of Resolute Forest Products, Domtar controls several sawmills across Canada.

Historically focused on pulp and paper production, the company has maintained an integrated forest-products portfolio that includes lumber manufacturing. As part of a restructuring program, Domtar closed lumber operations in Maniwaki, Quebec, and Glenwood, Arkansas.

The closures reflect the ongoing consolidation taking place across the North American wood-products industry.

Sierra Pacific Industries

Sierra Pacific Industries is one of the largest privately owned wood-products companies in the United States.

The company operates numerous sawmills across the western United States and manages extensive timberland holdings. Sierra Pacific has invested heavily in high-capacity sawmills and advanced processing technologies, allowing it to remain competitive despite the volatility of lumber markets.

Hampton Lumber

Hampton Lumber is a major privately owned lumber producer headquartered in Oregon.

The company operates sawmills primarily in the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. Hampton exports significant volumes of lumber to international markets, particularly Japan, and has built a reputation for efficient operations and strong relationships with timber suppliers.

Tolko Industries

Canada’s Tolko Industries operates several sawmills across Western Canada.

In recent years the company has adjusted its production footprint in response to declining timber availability in British Columbia. Some operations have been closed or curtailed while investment has focused on more competitive mills.

Despite these adjustments, Tolko remains a significant exporter of Canadian softwood lumber.

PotlatchDeltic

PotlatchDeltic completes the top ten ranking.

The company combines timberland ownership with sawmill and wood-products manufacturing operations across the United States. Its vertically integrated structure allows it to control both forest resources and lumber production.

A sector under pressure

The wave of mill closures during 2024 and 2025 illustrates how quickly the competitive landscape can change in the North American lumber industry.

Higher operating costs, tightening timber supply in parts of Canada and the continuing tariff dispute between the United States and Canada have forced producers to concentrate production in their most efficient mills.

At the same time, the growing importance of the U.S. South — with its vast pine resources and lower log costs — continues to reshape the geography of North American lumber production.

As companies adapt their mill networks to these shifting conditions, further consolidation among the largest producers appears increasingly likely.

[1

post-98222","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
