Log prices in Norway continued to decline in February, extending the gradual downward movement that began in the second half of 2025 after reaching exceptionally high levels in the previous market cycle.<\/p>\n
Prices for spruce sawlogs, the main raw material for the Norwegian sawmilling industry, fell by around 1\u20132% compared with January. Transactions that had previously been reported at around NOK 1,050\u20131,100 per m\u00b3 \u2014 roughly \u20ac90\u201395 per m\u00b3 \u2014 moved slightly lower during the month.<\/p>\n
Pine sawlogs recorded a similar development, also slipping by around 1\u20132% month-on-month, while industrial roundwood and pulpwood declined more moderately, generally by about 1% compared with the previous month.<\/p>\n
The recent price easing follows the strong rise recorded during 2024 and early 2025, when tight timber supply and steady demand from sawmills pushed Norwegian log prices to some of the highest levels seen in recent years. Even after the latest adjustments, spruce sawlogs around NOK 1,050 per m\u00b3 (about \u20ac90 per m\u00b3) remain well above levels seen earlier in the decade.<\/p>\n
While timber prices have begun to ease, many Norwegian sawmills continue to face difficult operating conditions. Several companies in the sector have reported weak financial results, and some mills have introduced temporary layoffs as margins remain under pressure.<\/p>\n
High log costs have been cited as a key challenge for the industry. Smaller sawmills in particular say that raw-material prices remain too high relative to lumber prices, limiting profitability. At the same time, parts of the industry warn that increasing concentration among large timber buyers could further strengthen competition for available logs.<\/p>\n
The Norwegian timber market therefore remains under pressure from both sides: forest owners have benefited from the strong price cycle of recent years, while sawmills continue to struggle to maintain margins amid high raw-material costs and more moderate lumber markets.<\/p>\n
