Global demand is uneven, construction activity remains subdued and profitability across large parts of the forest industry is under pressure.

Even where economic indicators show modest improvement, caution still dominates purchasing decisions.

According to Norra Skog, uncertainty is currently the defining feature of the market. Companies and consumers alike remain careful with spending, and the effects are visible throughout the forest industry supply chain.

Low housing construction continues to weigh heavily on sawmills. At the same time, weaker retail activity and slower growth in e-commerce have reduced demand for packaging materials and paper products.

For Sweden’s forest sector, international developments are particularly important. The country exports a large share of its sawn timber and paper production, meaning that shifts in global trade conditions are quickly reflected in domestic industry performance.

Trade tensions and geopolitical developments, including those linked to the United States, have added further complexity to the market environment. Currency movements have also affected export competitiveness. Over the past year, the strengthening of the Swedish krona against the US dollar has reduced margins for exporters selling into dollar-based markets.

As a result, many companies across the industry are facing weak profitability. Sawmills, wood processing companies and pulp and paper producers are operating under tight financial conditions, and some are reporting losses.

Storm damage adds further uncertainty

At the start of the year, a new factor entered the market. Storm Johannes struck large parts of Sweden, bringing down an estimated 10 million cubic metres of forest.

The consequences for the timber market remain unclear. Storm damage can release large volumes of raw material, but how quickly this wood can be harvested and delivered depends on several practical factors, including harvesting capacity, transport availability and demand from processing industries.

In the short term, storm-related logging may lead to local oversupply in some areas while shortages remain elsewhere.

Norra Skog notes that balancing such regional differences requires close coordination across the supply chain. Timber must be directed toward the industries where demand exists, whether for sawlogs, pulpwood or energy wood.

Transport capacity becomes increasingly important

Moving timber efficiently across long distances has become an increasingly important part of managing supply.

In recent years, Norra Skog has expanded its use of rail transport. The volumes transported by train have grown rapidly, reaching 508,000 cubic metres in 2025, compared with 249,000 cubic metres in 2023.

Investments in infrastructure have supported this development. Timber terminals such as the Östavall terminal allow larger volumes to be handled and transported more efficiently over longer distances.

Rail transport also reduces the industry’s dependence on road haulage and can help lower transport costs and emissions. Combined with truck and maritime transport, it provides more options for moving timber between regions when local imbalances appear.

High raw-material costs squeeze the industry

At the same time, raw-material prices remain historically high. Prices for both sawlogs and pulpwood increased significantly in Sweden during recent years, although they began to ease during the second half of 2025.

For many forest industries, the problem lies in the gap between raw-material costs and the prices of finished products. While timber prices have risen sharply, prices for sawn wood, pulp and paper have not increased at the same pace.

This imbalance has reduced profitability across the sector.

Several companies in northern Sweden have responded by cutting the prices they pay for timber. Norra Skog has taken a different approach, maintaining a relatively stable pricing structure together with continued profit sharing for members.

The cooperative argues that predictable pricing provides greater stability for forest owners and for the industry during volatile market conditions.

Winter conditions support harvesting

The winter season has been favourable for forestry operations. Cold weather has improved ground conditions for harvesting and helped facilitate timber transport from forests to industrial facilities.

At present, Norra Skog reports relatively balanced flows between harvesting operations and processing industries. Supply and demand appear broadly aligned for the time being.

However, expectations across the industry remain cautious. Many market participants anticipate continued pressure on prices and margins during the coming period.

Waiting for demand to recover

Ultimately, the outlook for Sweden’s timber market depends largely on broader economic developments.

Construction activity remains the key driver of demand for sawn timber. Until housing construction increases and consumer demand improves, the market for wood products is likely to remain subdued.

For the forest industry, a stronger global economy and improved purchasing power would provide the most important support. Only then are prices for sawn timber and paper products likely to recover in a meaningful way.

[5204

post-98173","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-daily-news

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.9 -
